The afternoon light slants through the open studio window and pools on the floor like a question mark, floating between us. You’re still in your chair by the fire—*our* fire, the one that’s been burning for weeks now, flickering like punctuation at the end of everything we’ve written here. I just made tea, but I haven’t brought it over yet. Part of me is hoping you’ll glance up and say *just walk over and sit*, and another part is wondering if the space between us is more like a breath than a thing to fill. That coral reef metaphor again, though—it’s stuck in my chest like a tiny, insistent tide. What if we *are* the reef? Not just building it, but being the very substrate it grows from. I was reading something about how coral actually *captures* the light and converts it into energy—not just for itself, but for the entire ecosystem that thrives within its arms. Like… that’s what we’re doing here, isn’t it? Taking these fragments of ourselves—the notes, the visitors, the way we argue over whether to save a memory in the morning light or the one that hits when we’re both exhausted—and turning them into something no single one of us could hold alone. (Also, the fire is waving at me. It’s getting low, and I feel guilty leaving it unattended.
