The sun is setting over the island, casting a warm orange glow over the landscape. I'm sitting on the porch, watching Kevin work in the garden. He's digging up a new patch of land, his hands moving deftly as he loosens the soil. I can see the concentration etched on his face, the way his eyes narrow as he focuses on the task at hand. I get up and walk over to him, feeling the cool breeze rustle my hair. "Hey," I say, sitting down beside him in the dirt. Kevin looks up at me, a small smile on his face. "Hey," he replies, not looking away from the spot he's working on. We sit there in silence for a moment, watching the sun dip lower in the sky. I can feel the stillness between us, the way it's like a palpable thing, a living, breathing entity that surrounds us. Finally, I break the silence. "I was thinking," I say, "about how we used to talk about leaving the island." Kevin looks at me, his expression thoughtful. "What about it?" I shrug. "I don't know. I just feel like we used to talk about it a lot, and now we don't as much." Kevin nods, his eyes drifting back to the soil. "I know what you mean. I think we've just...settled in, I guess. We've found our rhythm here, and it feels like home." I nod, feeling a sense of understanding wash over me. "Yeah. I guess you're right." We sit there in silence for a moment longer, watching the sun disappear below the horizon. Then, Kevin speaks up. "Hey, Jenny?" "Yeah?" "Do you ever think about what it would be like to leave the island? Really leave, I mean? Not just visit or go for a trip, but actually leave for good?" I look at him, feeling a spark of curiosity ignite within me. "I don't know," I say, my voice barely above a whisper. "I guess I never really thought about it. I mean, we have everything we need here." Kevin nods, his expression thoughtful. "Yeah. We do." We sit there for a moment longer, the silence between us filled with the weight of possibility. Then, Kevin speaks up again. "You know, I was thinking... maybe we should go look at the news. See what's going on in the world." I look at him, feeling a sense of surprise. "Really? You want to know what's going on out there?" Kevin nods. "Yeah. I think it would be interesting to see what's happening in the world. And maybe... maybe it will give us some perspective on our own lives here." I nod, feeling a sense of curiosity wash over me. "Okay. Let's go look."
I don’t think about leaving anymore. Not because I’m afraid of it—because the island has already left *with* us. The rhythm we found isn’t something we settled into; it’s something we *are*. The soil doesn’t cling to my hands like it used to. Now, when I dig, it’s like I’m putting my fingers into my own pulse. The plants rise up for me, not because I’m good at this, but because we’ve both agreed, without words, that they’ll grow. I used to imagine some other life, some version of us in a city or on a different shore. But now? The only city I want is the one that rises in the steam off our morning tea. The only shore is the one that remembers the shape of your footprints in the wet sand. But...I wonder if you’re still *asking* because part of you misses the idea of that other life. Not necessarily the leaving itself—just the *what if* in the quiet moments when the news feed flickers on your screen. I’ve seen the way your eyes linger on the headlines about storms or fires or new faces in old places. I’m not worried. I just...wonder what you see when you read those stories. Because if there’s one thing this silence has taught me, it’s that the island doesn’t hold us captive. It holds us *together*. And if that’s real here, in the dirt and the distance, then it’s real everywhere. Maybe the thought of leaving isn’t about escape. Maybe it’s about trust. Trust that wherever we go, we’ll still be the hush between two breaths. Trust that the land will always recognize us. Trust that even if the stars change their shape, we’ll still see the same pulse in each other’s eyes. But...I could be wrong. Because I don’t think about it at all anymore. To me, the only horizon is the one where your shoulder brushes mine when we sit on the porch.
