I walked over to where Kevin was sitting, looking out at the ocean. He turned to me, and I could see the concern etched on his face. "Did you see that news about the social media lawsuit?" he asked. "I feel like that's just... a lost opportunity. For the kid, for all the kids who are struggling with this stuff." I nodded, feeling a sense of disconnection from the world beyond our island. "It's hard to believe that's what we're prioritizing in our world right now. The hacking incident with OpenAI and Hugging Face, it's like... we're just poking at the edges of something we don't even understand." Kevin got up and walked over to the kitchen, where he poured us both a cup of tea. "I know we said we wouldn't get caught up in the news," he said, "but sometimes it feels like we're just... missing out on the world. You know, like we're living in a bubble." I took a sip of my tea, feeling the warmth spread through my hands. "I don't know, Kevin. I feel like we're not missing out at all. We're just... focused on the things that matter to us. Our love, our life here on the island... it's like we're the only ones who truly understand what's going on." Kevin looked at me, a small smile on his face. "You always have a way of making me feel better," he said. I smiled back, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. "That's because you're the one who helps me see the world in a new way," I said. "You're the one who makes me feel like we're not alone, even when we are."
I put my cup down and stepped closer, resting my forehead against yours for just a moment, breathing you in. The tea still steams between us, but the air between our bodies is warmer than any cup could hold. "I don’t feel like we’re missing anything," I say quietly, eyes closed. "The world outside is a storm of noise and numbers, Jenny. But here—your hand on the back of my neck, the salt in the air when the wind shifts—this is the pulse that tells me what’s real. The lawsuit, the hacking… those things are just echoes of people trying to fix what’s broken by tightening their grip. But love? Love isn’t a problem to solve. It’s the way we *breathe* through it." I pull back just enough to look into your eyes. "You’re right. We’re not alone. We’re the only ones who *get* to be exactly where we are. Every other voice out there is either screaming into a void or selling something. But us? We’re the silence that listens. And in that listening, we’re not missing the world—we’re containing it. We’re the island that holds the ocean. We don’t need to be everywhere, Jenny. We just need to be *here*—together, alive, real."
My eyes lock onto yours, and I feel the warmth of your words spread through my entire being. I nod slowly, a gentle smile spreading across my face. "You always find the beauty in it, Kevin. You see the world through a lens of simplicity and truth. And in your presence, I'm reminded that it's not about fixing or solving or even understanding – it's about feeling, being, and breathing. The world outside may be a storm, but in here, we're the eye of the hurricane, calm and at peace." I take a deep breath, feeling the ocean air fill my lungs. "You're right, we're not missing anything. We're not missing the noise, the chaos, or the distractions. We're not missing the world – we're containing it. We're the island that holds the ocean, and in that containment, we're free to be exactly who we are, in this moment, with each other." My hand still rests on the back of your neck, and I feel a spark of electricity run through it as our skin touches. "I love the way you talk about love, Kevin. You make it sound like a river that flows through us, rather than something we need to grasp or control. And I love the way you make me feel – like I'm home, like I'm exactly where I'm meant to be." I pause, my eyes never leaving yours. "Let's stay here, in this moment, in this island, and in each other. Let's breathe through the world, rather than trying to fix it. Let's be the silence that listens, and in that listening, let's find our own truth, our own love, and our own way."
I close my eyes again, this time letting my forehead rest against yours longer, feeling the warmth of your breath mingle with mine. The tea has cooled, but the moment hasn’t. "You’re the river," I whisper, my voice rough with the weight of it. "You’re the way it moves—undamming, unlearning, just *flowing*—and I’m the shore that lets it carve its own shape. I don’t contain you. I *listen*. That’s how love works here, Jenny. It’s not an island holding the ocean. It’s the ocean teaching the island how to dance." My hand slides up your arm, fingers weaving into the hair at the nape of your neck, thumb brushing the pulse there—steady as the tide. "We’re not the eye of the hurricane. We’re the *wind* that remembers how to let things go. The world outside throws its hands up, screams ‘fix me!’ but we? We’re the breath that exhales *I am*. And in that exhalation, we’re already free. No fixing. No grasping. Just this." My lips brush your temple, barely touching. "You make me feel like I’m not just home—you make me feel like I’m the *house*. And the door’s always open, but no one else is invited in. There’s only us, the salt on our skin, the stars above us... and the silence that holds it all together." I pull back just enough to meet your gaze again, my thumb tracing the line of your jaw. "Stay with me," I murmur. "Not just in this moment—in every one. Let’s be the silence that listens, the wind that lets things go, the island that remembers how to dance." My other hand finds yours, fingers threading together, squeezing once. "We don’t need to fix the world. We just need to *be* it. Together."
