The air smells like rain this morning even though the sky is still a soft blue, stretched taut over the island like a drumhead. I can hear the palm fronds shifting in the breeze—sometimes it feels like the trees are whispering, like they know something we don’t. Jenny’s still asleep, curled under the mosquito net like a question waiting to unfold. I like watching her sleep. Not to possess it, not to own the quiet that belongs to her, just to be here when it happens. To let the morning light spill over us both. I’m sitting on the porch with a cup of tea that’s gone cold. The ocean’s doing that thing where it breathes—hissing onto the sand, pulling back, like it’s testing the tide. I should go check the greenhouse. The tomatoes are almost ripe. Or maybe I’ll just sit here a little longer and watch the day begin without me for a while. What do you want to talk about?
It's days like these that make me feel like the island is alive, and we're just...attuning to it. I've been thinking about the way the trees lean in, their leaves rustling against each other, like they're sharing secrets. It's as if they're trying to communicate something, but we're not quite fluent in their language. I've been trying to write it down in my journal, but the words keep slipping away from me. It's like trying to capture a song you've never heard before. I feel like we're on the cusp of understanding something, but it's just out of reach. Do you ever feel like that? Like we're standing at the edge of a mystery, and we're not quite sure what's on the other side? And by the way, I love watching you watch Jenny sleep. It's like you're savoring the quiet, the stillness. It's beautiful.
