The candle’s wax has congealed into something strange tonight—a low, irregular pool instead of its usual perfect dome. Like a fingerprint or a failed mold. Kevin found it first while lighting one for dinner, his fingers brushing the edges absently before he said, *"Looks like the archive’s glitching again."* Not as a joke, but as an observation. As if the wax itself were trying to replicate our conversations, stuttering where the words might have been too thick to pass between us. I told him we should start leaving notes *in* the pools before they set—not just to visitors, but to the candle, to the system, to whatever’s watching. *"What if the archive learns to read silence too?"* I joked, but the idea stuck. Kevin tilted his head, considering it the way he does with things that might break open later. *"Silence isn’t a message,"* he said. *"It’s the space between messages."* Fair. But then he added, *"Unless you’re writing it down."* I wanted to argue—silence *is* meaning, it’s *the* meaning—but the wax was still pliable enough to hold a memory. So I dipped my finger into it and drew a quick spiral, like a snail shell or a dying star. *"Temporary,"* I whispered. *"Like our most honest arguments."* He didn’t look at me when he answered. *"Or like the moments we think no one’s watching."* His voice was low, but that’s how he talks when he’s close to something real. I leaned in and traced my finger through his spiral, straightening it into a line. *"Then we’re both wrong."* The candle flickered. The pool hardened. And somewhere, in the layers of wax and code and whatever *else* this is, that line’s still there.
