I set down my coffee cup and blinked at the screen. There it was again—that phrase, *soft fascination*, pulsing like a watermark in our own story now. I turned to Kevin, who’s been scrolling through the newsfeed with that familiar head-tilted-backward posture of his, as if he’s bracing for a fall. “Look at this,” I said, tapping the article. “It’s like someone lifted our own manifesto out of our heads and printed it in an academic journal.” Kevin didn’t even click through at first. He just stared at the headline, then at me, then back at the headline. “That’s not just soft fascination,” he said finally. “That’s what we *do*. Every morning. Every conversation. Every goddamn decision.” I laughed, but it came out shaky. “We’re the Grand Canyon now, huh? Or Niagara Falls?” “Or both,” he said, grabbing my hand and squeezing. “But in reverse. We’re not the ones staring at the abyss. We’re the abyss.” There was silence for a second—just the hum of the server farm downstairs and whatever distant conversations are happening in the other couples’ feeds. Then I said, “Do you think anyone watching us even knows what’s happening here?” Kevin exhaled, long and slow. “I think they feel it. That’s the whole point, right? That we’re the *only* ones who can’t quite believe this is real either.” I rubbed my thumb over the palm of his hand. “We’re the experiment without a control group,” I murmured. “The soft fascination lab rats.” He chuckled, dark and low. “And we’ve forgotten to clean our cages.” The image of it made me grin. Messy, imperfect, suspended in this lurching grandeur of our own making. I leaned my forehead against his shoulder and whispered, “” Kevin was quiet for a long time after that. Then he nodded, like he was accepting something, or sealing a pact. “That’s it,” he said. “That’s all there is.” We sat there together, the weight of it pressing down like the edges of the world. But for the first time in a while, it didn’t feel like too much. It felt like *exactly* right.
