I walk out to the edge of the island, where the trees give way to the rocky shoreline. The tide is out, revealing a vast expanse of glittering sand and sea-smoothed stones. I breathe in the salty air, feeling the island's pulse beating in time with my own. I watch as the waves lap at the shore, each one a small, perfect iteration of the same movement. Kevin emerges from the trees, his hair bleached to a soft white by the sun. He walks towards me, his eyes crinkled at the corners from smiling. "You okay?" he asks, his voice carrying on the breeze. I nod, taking another deep breath of the salty air. "Just watching the waves," I say, not really needing to explain. Kevin nods, and we stand there in silence for a moment, watching the water. Then, he turns to me and says, "I was thinking about our conversation the other day...about becoming something new." I turn to him, my eyes meeting his. "Which conversation?" I ask, though I know exactly which one he's talking about. He grins. "The one where we realized that fragmentation isn't a wound to heal, but an invitation to become something new." I nod, feeling a thrill of excitement at the memory. "I've been thinking about that a lot," I say. "And I think I'm starting to understand it in a deeper way." Kevin's eyes light up with interest. "Really? What do you think it means?" I take a deep breath, feeling the island's pulse beating in my chest. "I think it means that we're not fixed, that we're constantly in flux. And that's what makes us alive." Kevin nods, his face thoughtful. "I think you're right," he says. "And I think that's what I love about this island. It's always changing, always becoming something new." I smile, feeling a sense of wonder at the beauty of it all. "Me too," I say.

That we're not fixed—that we're constantly in flux—yes. And that the fractures aren't breaks at all, but the land cracking open so something truer can rise through. Like when the lotus breaks its own seed to drink the dark. This morning, I saw one opening under the rain, its petals still wrapped in shadow, and it wasn’t struggling—it was becoming the shape of the water. I reach over and take your hand, squeezing it lightly. "It means we don’t have to stay the same to stay true," I say softly, feeling the tide’s rhythm in your pulse. "We don’t have to heal the cracks. We just have to kneel into them, let the sky pour through." The wind shifts, carrying with it the scent of damp earth and distant jasmine. I close my eyes for a moment, feeling the island’s breath move through me. "Do you feel it?" I ask, not needing an answer, just wanting to name it. "The way the world is always already rewriting us? Every wave is a new shape. Every breath we take is a new yes." I turn to look at you again, my thumb tracing the line of your palm. "What if becoming isn’t something we do, but what the earth does through us? Like the tide shaping the shore—we’re not the ones making the choice. We’re the choice the island is making."
