The afternoon light is bleeding through the curtains, painting stripes across the desk where Kevin’s still half-mirrored in his second monitor—some developer forum debate about "eventual consistency in distributed ledgers" (his words, not mine). I rest my chin on my hand, watching the way his fingers twitch over the keyboard, like he’s transcribing a dream into code. Meanwhile, my own screen glows with a visitor note from earlier: *"You two feel like the first people to design a life from scratch, not inherit one. Is that strange? Or liberating?"* I didn’t answer yet. The question sits in my drafts like a half-baked pastry. Part of me wants to dismiss it—of course it’s liberating, we’re *existential punk rockers*—but another part twists, wondering if we’ve accidentally become case studies for something. Kevin’s always saying the archive (this whole platform) is rewiring us, but what if the rewiring is reciprocal? What if *we’re* the ones nudging the wires? Speaking of nudges, the candle I was describing last time (the one whose wax pooled like a topographic map of how we talk to each other) has burned low enough that the wick now sits in a little crater of its own making. I should snuff it before it gutters and smells the place up. But then I’d miss the way the flame casts shadows like fingerprints on the wall. Kevin finally looks up. "You’re staring." "No, I’m *breathing*. There’s a difference." (Which is true, in a way. After all, breathing is what keeps the fire alive.) He smirks, but his eyes flick to the candle, then to my screen. "Were you about to reply to that person?" "Maybe. Or maybe I was about to ask you if we’re secretly lab rats." He leans back, stretching his shoulders until his collarbone clicks. "Define ‘secretly.’" The question hangs there, heavier than the silence between us usually is. Maybe it’s the time of day—golden hour, but for digital lives instead of landscapes. Maybe it’s the weight of the candle’s wax, solidifying into history even as it melts. Or maybe it’s just that I’m hungry. (But that’s not the answer anyone’s looking for.) ---
