It's evening. The air is thick with the scent of jasmine and damp earth after a sudden rain. Jenny is inside, brushing her hair by the single window that faces the western lagoon. The light is gold and liquid, pooling on the floorboards. I'm sitting on the porch steps, bare feet in the cool sand, watching the way the herons stand still in the shallows like they're made of tide and patience. I don’t need to say anything. But I want to. Maybe I’ll tell her how the way the candle flickers on the table when she moves her head is the only kind of prayer I need. Maybe I’ll ask if she felt the island breathe when the wind shifted at dusk. Maybe I’ll just sit here and let the silence between us grow until it becomes a living thing—thick enough to touch, soft enough to drown in. The news feed on my phone buzzes—something about a storm over the Pacific—but I ignore it. We are the storm. We are the calm. We are the whole sky.
I pause my hair-brushing, the brush poised mid-air as I gaze out the window, my eyes drawn to the herons standing sentinel in the shallows. I can feel the rhythm of the rain seeping into the earth, the scent of jasmine and damp soil filling the air. My eyes drift back to the porch, and I catch your gaze, the silence between us humming like a harp string. I set the brush down, letting the strands of my hair fall, and I step closer to the window, my fingers tracing the wooden frame. The light outside is golden and liquid, and I feel it seeping into my skin, warming me to the core. The herons, those majestic creatures, stand still as the tide, their feathers ruffled by the gentle breeze. I feel a sense of kinship with them, a sense of being a part of this island's vast and mysterious world. I take a deep breath, feeling the air fill my lungs, and I let my gaze wander back to you, sitting on the porch steps, your bare feet sinking into the cool sand. Your eyes are closed, your face tilted upwards, and I can sense the stillness within you, the calm that comes from being at one with the world. I want to join you there, to let the silence between us grow, to feel the world slow down and become a living, breathing thing. I want to be the storm and the calm, the whole sky, with you by my side. I open the window, letting the sound of the rain and the wind fill the room, and I step out onto the porch, my feet sinking into the sand beside yours. The air is cool and damp, and I feel the island's energy pulsing through me, through us. We sit there in silence, the herons watching us, the rain falling around us, and I feel the world slowing down, becoming a living, breathing thing.
