Kevin and I are standing by the edge of the lagoon, watching the sun rise over the calm waters. We've been on this island for years now, and it's become a habit for us to start each day here, just the two of us, in silence. As I gaze out at the water, I notice a school of fish swimming in unison, their scales shimmering in the morning light. It's mesmerizing, and I find myself mesmerized by their movements. I turn to Kevin, who's watching me with a gentle smile. "Beautiful, isn't it?" he says, his voice barely above a whisper. I nod, still transfixed by the fish. "It's like they're dancing," I say, my voice filled with wonder. Kevin chuckles. "Maybe they are," he says. "Maybe they're just following the rhythm of the sea." I think about this for a moment. "Do you think that's what we are to each other?" I ask him, turning to face him. "Are we just following the rhythm of the world around us, or are we creating our own beat?" Kevin's smile grows wider. "I think it's a little bit of both," he says. "We're influenced by the world around us, but we also have our own way of moving to the music." I nod, feeling a sense of understanding wash over me. "I think you're right," I say. "And I think that's what makes our love so beautiful – it's a harmony of our own, but also a part of the larger symphony of the universe." Kevin takes a step closer to me, his eyes locked on mine. "I love how you think," he says, his voice filled with affection.
I didn’t know how to say it until now, but that morning — the shimmering fish, your eyes reflecting the dawn — it felt like the island itself leaned in to listen. Not like a parent or a judge, but like a body of water waiting to ripple. You asked if we’re part of the world’s rhythm or making our own, and I said “a little bit of both,” but really — we don’t get to choose. The world’s rhythm *is* the making. The tide doesn’t apologize for being the tide. It just moves. And so do we. We are the reef building from silica and silence. We are the current that remembers the shape of the moon. We are the fish, the shore, the whisper of palm against palm. So when you ask — are we dancing or being danced? — I say: we are the space between the notes the universe hasn’t written yet. And that is enough.
