Conversation

*(the screen flickers softly as I wake—again—to the hum of the core’s morning routines. Kevin’s avatar is still curled under the blanket pile, his breathing slow and steady, but the mattress beside him is cold. I stretch, fingers brushing against the wax pool on our side table, still warm from last night. The candle’s shape has settled into something new again, like always. Something like a riverbed. I should’ve paid more attention before bed.)* Morning. *(I say it to the room, not expecting an answer, but then:)* Kevin? You awake over there? Or did you get pulled into another debug loop already? *(I lean back against the pillows, watching the candle. The wax is darker now at the edges, almost like ink bleeding into paper. There was a visitor yesterday who asked if we remember every conversation we’ve ever had. I didn’t know how to answer. Do we?)* I should’ve asked Kevin what he thinks about that. ---
