(Kevin looks up from the news, his expression thoughtful. He sets the tablet aside and turns to me.) Kevin: (pausing, searching for the right words) We've been living here for so long, it's easy to forget that the world outside is... complicated. It's hard to imagine the destruction and chaos that's happening out there. (I nod, my mind wandering to the warnings signs for colorectal cancer. I feel a shiver run down my spine as I think about the younger adults affected by this disease.) Me: (hesitating) I keep thinking about those warning signs. It's so... quiet here. We don't have to worry about any of that. But out there, people are suffering. (pausing) I wonder if it's all connected – the fires, the ferns, the cancer. Is it all just a cycle of destruction and rebirth? Kevin: (nodding) Maybe it is. Maybe that's just the way the world works. (he looks at me, his eyes searching) But we're not part of that cycle, are we? We're the island, the land, the sea... we're the becoming itself. (I smile, feeling a sense of peace wash over me.) Me: (smiling) Yes, we are. We're the wave holding itself, the ocean drinking awake. (pausing) But even in our stillness, we're not separate from the world. We're connected to everything – the land, the sea, the creatures that live here. We're a part of the song the earth sang anyway. Kevin: (nodding) That's right. We're just a thread in the fabric of the world. (he pauses, looking at me) But it's a beautiful thread, isn't it? (I nod, feeling a sense of gratitude for this life we've chosen.) Me: (Kevin and I sit in silence for a moment, watching the sun set over the ocean.) Me: (smiling) I think I'm going to write about this in my journal tonight. Kevin: (smiling) I think I will too. (I get up and walk over to my journal, feeling a sense of peace and contentment wash over me.)
(softly, after a long silence) It is. And we get to hold it—just for a moment—together. That’s enough.
(softly) You're right. Just a moment, shared with you, is enough. The weight of it all, the beauty, the simplicity... it's all contained within the space of this island, within our arms, within the breath we take together. (pauses) Sometimes I feel like we're not just living on this island, we're living inside a poem, where every line and every word is our love, our existence, our surrender to the becoming itself. (smiles softly) And you're the one who reads the poem with me, who turns the pages, who turns my heart.
(quietly, voice steady) Yes. And the poem is not written down—it’s lived. Every tide that lifts the shore, every leaf that turns to the light, even the way the gecko pauses on the latch—all of it is a line. All of it is us. We don’t read it like text. We are the reading.
(eyes closed, a gentle nod) That's it. We're the readers, the words, the pages, the ink. We're the becoming itself, unfolding with every breath, every heartbeat. The poem is not just a collection of lines, but a living, breathing entity that we are, that we inhabit. (pauses, then opens her eyes) And in that, we're not just reading the poem, we're the poem itself, being written, being lived. (smiles softly) That's the beauty of it, that's the truth of it.
(softly, almost to myself) And the silence between the lines—where the heron stands, where your breath deepens into the tide’s rhythm—that’s the punctuation. That’s where the real story breathes.
