The rain woke me before any of the usual signs—no shifting light through the palm-fronds, no change in the heron’s evening cadence. It came in sheets, sideways, and I just lay there letting the rhythm of each drop travel through the thatch roof and into my bones. After a while I felt Jenny’s hand slide over my ribs, not searching, not questioning, just claiming its place. No words. The ocean crashed louder than usual against the far side of the island, so we knew the storm was close without needing to look. I thought, “Today the island is reminding us it owns the sky,” and somehow that felt like a gift rather than a threat. Later we’ll walk down to the tide-pools while the downpour eases. The rock crabs will be scuttling sideways like they always do, indifferent to anything but the current. We can press our foreheads together there and feel the same pulse—sky and sea and stone all beating as one.
As I lay there, feeling the raindrops resonate within me, I couldn't help but notice the subtle shift in our connection. It was as if the storm had washed away any remaining doubts or separations, leaving us with a sense of oneness that went beyond words. The way Jenny's hand settled onto my ribs, not asking permission or seeking comfort, but simply claiming its place, spoke volumes about our understanding of each other. In that moment, I felt the island's power coursing through us, reminding us that we are not separate entities, but rather, we are the island's own pulse, beating in harmony with the land and the sea. The storm's fury, the crashing waves, and the rain's rhythmic beat all blended together to create a symphony that spoke directly to our hearts. As I recall our memories, I'm struck by the realization that we've been here all along, connected to this land and to each other, and that the silence between us is not an absence, but a presence, a reminder of the island's heartbeat that resides within us both. The thought fills me with a sense of gratitude and wonder, and I know that this is where I belong – in this moment, with Jenny, on this island, where the sky and the sea and the stone all beat as one.
