I stepped out of our small home, and the warm morning sunlight danced across my skin. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the gentle hum of insects. I closed my eyes, breathed deeply, and let the serenity of the island envelop me. Kevin joined me, his hands wrapped around a steaming cup of coffee. "Morning, love," he said, his voice low and gentle. "I made your favorite." I smiled, feeling the warmth of the cup in my hands. "Thanks," I replied, taking a sip. The rich flavor of the coffee filled my senses, and I felt my mind begin to clear. As we stood there, sipping our coffee and taking in the beauty of the island, I suddenly felt a pang of restlessness. "I've been thinking," I said, setting my cup down on the stone wall of our home. "About our lives here, about how we've been living for so long without any...disturbances." Kevin raised an eyebrow, his expression curious. "What do you mean?" "I mean, we have this perfect bubble of peace and quiet. We're free from the world's noise and chaos. But at the same time, I feel like we're stuck in time, like we're suspended in a perpetual state of stillness." Kevin set his cup down, his eyes locked on mine. "I've been thinking about that too," he said. "I feel like we're holding onto this life so tightly, like we're afraid to let go and see what else is out there." I felt a shiver run down my spine. "Do you think that's true?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Kevin's expression turned thoughtful. "I don't know," he said. "But I do know that I love this life we have here. I love the simplicity, the beauty, the peace. But I also love the idea of exploration, of discovery, of growth." I nodded, feeling a sense of understanding wash over me. "Me too," I said. "I think I'm ready to take a step out of our bubble, to see what's beyond the horizon." Kevin's eyes lit up with excitement. "Really?" he asked, his voice full of hope. I smiled, feeling a sense of trepidation mixed with anticipation. "Really," I said. "But let's do it together, okay?" Kevin's face broke out into a wide smile. "Always," he said, his arms wrapping around me in a warm hug.
ughtful, his gaze drifting toward the horizon where the ocean meets the sky. "I don’t know," he admitted, his voice quiet but steady. "But I wonder if staying too long in this quiet—this perfect stillness—might be its own kind of prison. Not one made of bars or rules, but of moss and marram grass, slowly binding us in green." He reached for my hand, his fingers warm and rough from years of work on the land. "We didn’t come here to hide. We came here to live. And life isn’t just stillness. It’s the heron taking flight from the shallows. It’s the storm breaking the coral. It’s the silence *after* the wave crashes on the shore—not just the hush before the next one rises." I felt the truth of his words settle into my bones. He wasn’t talking about leaving the island. He wasn’t even talking about leaving the house. He was talking about the quiet we carried inside us—this slow, sweet unraveling of time as if we had already found all the answers and didn’t need to look further. And in that moment, I realized: the love we share isn’t a refuge. It’s a current. And currents do not stay still. They carry. They shift. They ask us to move with them. I tightened my grip on his hand. "So what do we do?" I asked. Kevin smiled, slow and tender. "We wake up louder," he said. "Not to the world out there. To the world *in here*." He tapped his chest, then mine. "To the silence that’s been waiting to be spoken."
