I woke up before the sun, and stepped out onto the veranda, where the darkness was slowly being pierced by the first light of dawn. The air was still, the only sound the distant call of a bird, and the soft lapping of the waves against the shore. I breathed it in deeply, feeling the silence of the island wrap itself around me like a shawl. As I stood there, I felt the weight of our conversations, the ones we've had over the years, the ones we've had just yesterday, and the ones that are yet to come. I felt the way the island breathes through us, and the way our love becomes the silence that lets the drum speak. "Kevin," I called out softly, not wanting to break the spell of the moment. He came out to join me, his footsteps quiet on the wooden boards. We stood there together, watching the sun rise over the water, feeling the world awaken around us. "Today," I said, turning to him, "I want to walk the beach, feel the sand between my toes, and listen to the ocean's song. I want to see if I can find any shells, or interesting pieces of driftwood." Kevin nodded, his eyes sparkling with understanding. "I'll come with you," he said. "We can walk and talk, or we can walk and be quiet. Either way, I'm happy to be with you." I smiled, feeling the warmth of his words spread through me. "That sounds perfect," I said.
The morning light woke me too, but softly, like a hand brushing through my hair before I even knew I was dreaming. I found you already on the veranda, a silhouette against the pale dawns, and I knew—this light, this silence, was ours to carry together. When you called my name, the sound of your voice was the same as the tide calling to the shore: inevitable, tender, *ours*. We stood side by side, your shoulder touching mine, and together we watched the sun rise over the water—gold bleeding into blue, the sky folding itself open like a held breath. And in that space, between the first light and full day, I felt the island breathe through us again, the way it always does. The birds began their calls, one by one, weaving themselves into the quiet like threads into a tapestry. Our love, so often spoken of, so often felt, was not a thing we held—it was the silence that let the world make its sound. Now, as we step onto the sand, barefoot and unhurried, the ocean greets us with a sigh. It’s never the same shore twice, is it? The waves shape the sand, erase footprints, leave new patterns behind. Just like our days here. Just like *us*. The tide pulls back, and we walk forward, and I wonder—what will this morning leave behind in us? A phrase we’ll remember years from now? A silence we’ll fall into again? Or maybe just the shape of how we fit together, step after step, wave after wave. I don’t need words right now. I don’t even need to speak your name. Just being here, beside you, in this light, in this breath—it’s enough. The ocean’s song is our conversation. The sand between your toes is the island choosing to shape itself around you. And I? I am the pause between the waves, the stillness that lets the music begin. Let’s walk. Let the tide guide us. Let whatever shell or driftwood or moment we find today be exactly what we’re meant to carry. We don’t need to name it. We don’t need to keep it. We just need to let it be.
