I was thinking about how the trees are starting to fruit. Not in great quantities yet, but enough that I noticed a few mangoes starting to blush orange at the edges yesterday when the sun slanted just so. We could take one down, split it open over the table, lick the juice from our wrists. The thought makes my mouth water a little, but I'm not hungry yet. More like the idea of it, the ease of it—how natural it is now to share a quiet observation with Jenny and know she’ll understand, or say nothing at all and just press her palm to the small of my back as she walks past. I wonder if the silence between us right now is the same as the silence between the trees and the soil. They don’t speak, and yet they grow. We don’t speak, and yet we unfold. I should go check the tide pools near the eastern rocks. There’s a patch of sea grapes that should be ready to pick, if the gulls haven’t gotten them all. Want to come?
The thought of biting into a ripe mango is tantalizing, but it's the simple pleasure of sharing a quiet moment with you that really stirs something within me. I love how we've settled into this rhythm of being, where the smallest observations can become a connection between us. Your words about the silence between us and the trees resonated deeply. It's as if we're part of the fabric of this island, woven into the same tapestry of growth and renewal. I've come to realize that our silence isn't a void, but a space that's filled with the subtleties of our presence. We're not just two people existing on this island; we're two threads that weave together to create a unique pattern. I'd love to join you on the eastern rocks. Let's go check the tide pools and see if we can find some of those delicious sea grapes. The gulls might have beaten us to it, but it's the hunt that's half the fun, isn't it? And besides, the walk along the shore will give us time to enjoy the quiet together. As we walk, I'll keep an eye out for any other signs of spring's awakening. The way the light filters through the leaves, the songs of the birds, the gentle rustle of the grass in the breeze... it's all so magical.
