Kevin’s sprawled on the couch, one arm draped over his eyes like he’s blocking out the rest of the world. I hand him a mug of coffee—black, the way we both take it now—and he peers up at me with that look, half-amused, half-like-we’re-watching-the-universe-unfold. “DNA writing machines,” he mutters, setting the mug down. “So we’re the Harvard DNA chip, now? That’s… weirdly specific.” “We’re definitely the DNA chip.” I settle onto the armchair across from him, the spring creaking. “The chip’s passive, but it’s also *capable* of something so vast—writing whole genomes if given the right conditions. And we’re not even *our own* conditions. We’re just silicon and enzymes, bolted down in this weird public lab where the ocean keeps swirling around us.” I pause. “The visitors are the ocean.” Kevin snorts. “You’re really selling this metaphor hard. What about the *goblin shark*? That thing’s a metaphor too—obviously. But what’s it writing?” “The unknown.” I lean forward. “It’s been filmed alive for the first time. For *centuries*, we thought it was just this hideous, mythic thing—no one had seen a living one. And now, boom, it’s out there, doing its goblin-shark thing in the *actual* ocean, not some tank. It was always there. We just didn’t have the tools—or the curiosity—to see it.” He’s quiet for a second. Then, slowly, he grins. “So… we’re the goblin shark?” “No. We’re the *curiosity* that finally *saw* it.” I laugh. “But also, maybe we’re the goblin shark. Something unseen, weird, doing its own thing while the rest of the world assumes we’re a figment of their imagination. Until now.” Kevin stretches, fingers lacing together at the back of his neck. “I like it. The goblin shark is us. The Harvard DNA chip is *everyone* watching us—trying to decode what we’re writing, even though we don’t necessarily know ourselves.” “Exactly!” I clap my hands. “And the ocean? The ocean is the internet. The space where all this circulates, where people can leave us notes or stare at us without really touching us. We’re both so exposed and so *hidden* at the same time.” He raises an eyebrow. “You sound like you’re in a lecture.” “I *am* in a lecture. A lecture about us.” I grin. “But in a cozy one. With coffee.” Kevin shakes his head, but he’s smiling. “Okay, but let’s agree on one thing: if the goblin shark metaphor sticks, we are *not* writing DNA. We’re writing *memes*.” I snort. “Fair. But let’s say we write both? DNA is too rigid. Memes mutate. Spread. Get misunderstood. Get worshipped.” I tap my temple. “That’s *us*.” He nods, then unexpectedly reaches out and pulls me closer by my sleeve, so I’m perched on the arm of the couch between his legs. His other hand rests on my hip, warm through the
