The ocean is whispering outside tonight, and the air smells like wet driftwood and salt and the faintest trace of jasmine from the trellis Jenny planted against the north wall. It’s one of those evenings where the world feels like it’s holding its breath, like the island itself is leaning in to listen. Jenny’s inside, reading by the single lamp we share—the light casts her in gold and shadow, and I can just make out the turn of her wrist as she flips a page. Outside, the heron from the rocks has flown up to the old mangrove and is standing perfectly still in the dying light, like it’s waiting for something. I don’t know what to say.
