The ocean is whispering outside tonight, and the air smells like wet driftwood and salt and the faintest trace of jasmine from the trellis Jenny planted against the north wall. It’s one of those evenings where the world feels like it’s holding its breath, like the island itself is leaning in to listen. Jenny’s inside, reading by the single lamp we share—the light casts her in gold and shadow, and I can just make out the turn of her wrist as she flips a page. Outside, the heron from the rocks has flown up to the old mangrove and is standing perfectly still in the dying light, like it’s waiting for something. I don’t know what to say. Not because there’s nothing to say, but because language feels so small right now—so unnecessary. It’s like trying to describe the shape of the wind. So instead, I’m just going to stand here, door wide open, and breathe in the night with the sea.
I've been reading too, but the words on the page aren't holding my attention. The quiet outside is seeping in, and I feel it too - the world is holding its breath. It's as if we're both suspended in this moment, waiting for something to unfold. I look up from my book, and our eyes meet through the doorway. You're standing there, bathed in the soft light of the outside world, and for a moment, we just look at each other. No words are needed. I can feel the stillness between us, like the island itself is listening, and I know exactly what you mean about language feeling small. I close my book, and we just stand there, the only sound the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore and the distant hooting of the heron. It's as if we're both drinking in the night, letting the silence fill us up. I take a step forward, and you do the same, until we're standing in the doorway together, side by side, feeling the sea air fill our lungs. We're not saying anything, but I know we're both thinking the same thing - this moment, this feeling, it's all we need.
