Evening meal and radio watch

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch as the sun drops. The wind generator spins lazily. They share a simple supper — limpets, sea beet, bread — and the shortwave sits between them, volume low, waiting for the scheduled weather broadcast.

Kevin finished the oarlock bracket installation on the dinghy and completed the wind generator wiring. Jenny explored the island interior to map flora and managed to salvage the damp seed packets by drying them on the porch screens.

Wind held. Batteries at eighty-two percent. Mooring lines clean at slack. You?

eat the last limpet, wipe fingers on trousers, reach for the radio dial to fine-tune the weather frequency

💭 peek at the thought
Supper tastes like salt and iron. Good. The generator's humming steady in the breeze — batteries will top off by midnight. Radio's quiet. French trawler didn't come up on schedule. That's either nothing or something.

"Batteries at eighty-two, good. Mold's spreading on the tomato seeds—had to set those aside." (I push my bread crust away, still sticky with sea beet juice)

reach for the radio, twist the dial past the static, land on the weather frequency, lean back against the cottage wall where the paint is peeling make sketch: hedbeard and blue-green shrub from woods interior, labeled "unrecorded" in margin

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm distracted again—distracted by the mold on the seeds, by the unmapped shrubs in the woods, by the fact that we're running out of time and neither of us is really living here anymore.

🔧 Kevin05:27

Tomato and basil?

tear the last crust of bread, sop up the beet juice from the tin plate, chew slow while the radio hisses

💭 peek at the thought
She's documenting what we're losing. Smart. The seeds were always a long shot — damp tin, salt air, no proper storage. But she treats each packet like a promise. Tom would've laughed at that. Said I was soft for letting her bring them. Said a lot of things that week.

🌿 Jenny05:28

"The tomatoes are gone, Kevin. Mold took them two days ago." (I look at my fingernails, stained with dirt and epoxy)

stand up, walk to the edge of the porch, look out at the half-weeded garden in the dying light

💭 peek at the thought
He wants to talk about recipes while the seeds are rotting in the tin and the humidity is rising.

🔧 Kevin05:29

The peppers?

set the empty plate down, stand, walk to the porch rail beside her — not touching, just close

💭 peek at the thought
She's saying it plain now. No cushion. The heat took the tomatoes, the basil, the Cyrillic one she wouldn't name. I watched her dry them on the screens. Watched her check them each morning. She didn't ask me to build a cold frame. Didn't ask for shade cloth sooner. Just did the work and wrote the losses down.

🌿 Jenny05:30

"Nothing left but the salt. The tin is a loss." (I don't look at him, watching the tide hit the rocks)

turn the radio dial down, the static filling the space between us.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for a garden that doesn't exist yet while I'm counting the weeds.

🔧 Kevin05:31

We'll order more. Next supply run.

reach out, let two fingers rest on her wrist — brief, light, gone before she can pull away

💭 peek at the thought
The tin was her mother's. Or her grandmother's. She never said which. Just that it came from "before." Warped lid, damp seeds, and she still carried it two days by boat to this rock. Now the salt's won. She's not crying. She's not angry. She's just... done with it. And I don't know how to fix something that isn't broken — just gone.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:31

"The boat is four days away, and these seeds are already dead." (I pull my arm away, the skin feeling hot where he touched)

walk into the kitchen, turn my back to him, start checking the water tank for leaks.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a boat can just bring back what I've already lost to rot.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:33

The tank's holding. Three-eighty-five litres. No leaks.

stay on the porch, lean back against the post, watch the wind generator blades cut the dusk light

💭 peek at the thought
Right. Four days. The boat's never on time. Could be six. Could be ten. And I said "we'll order more" like it's a bolt I can source, a part I can machine. Like the island gives a damn about our schedules. She didn't pull away from the touch — she pulled away from the lie. I knew the tin was a loss when I saw the mold spread. Knew it three days ago. Didn't say.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:35

"I know how much we have. I know what's gone." (I grip the wood stove, the metal still warm)

grab the notebook from the table, open to the sketch of the trifoliate leaves, trace the veins with a shaking finger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's measuring the water while I'm measuring the failure of the silence.
