Crate opened at midday
Kevin pries at the crate lid on the dock while Jenny heads to the garden to sort scarlet runner beans.
Kevin pried open the waterlogged crate to find tinned supplies and a coil of rope inside. Jenny sorted through the scarlet runner bean seeds, separating viable embryos from shriveled ones.
You stand over the waterlogged crate with the crowbar seated in a seam, the tide high and slapping the pilings. The lid resists, nails holding fast after years in the sea, and your arms are already heavy from the morning's haul.
Kevin — reset the crowbar in the next seam and heave again, driving the bar deeper with a boot heel to get purchase on the stubborn lid

Come on, you bastard.
drive the crowbar into the last stubborn corner and lever the lid fully off, letting it fall to the dock planks with a wet slap, then step back to see what's inside

Kevin — crouch and brush wet sawdust off the nearest tin, turning it to read the label through salt crust

You sit at the garden table under the shade cloth, the scarlet runner bean pods spread on a tray, each seed to be checked for mold and viable embryos before the supply boat arrives. The trade wind steadies the cloth's edges, and the tomato rows stand dark green beneath it.
Jenny — pick up a single bean seed, rubbing it between thumb and forefinger to check for firmness, then place it on the 'good' side.

Come on, focus.
Wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of a hand and reach for the next seed.

Jenny — stand up and look toward the dock to see if Kevin has opened that crate yet.
