The Calm Before the Arrival

The sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows across the garden wall.

The air at the old shrine is heavy with humidity, the flat sky darkening as the wet season clouds thicken over the island. The barometer shows a steady drop to 1015 hPa, signaling an approaching front. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools.

🔧 Kevin23:40

Kevin — stand up, brush dust from knees, pick up the micrometer and bronze sleeve, walk back to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
The light's going fast. Need to decide — finish the micrometer check here by headlamp or carry the bronze sleeve back to the cottage bench where the light's better and the stove's warm for the heat-fit. My hands are cold.

Don't forget to lock the shed if the wind shifts.

Follow him to the cottage, then turn back to check the heirloom tomato seeds one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going back to the engine again while the pressure is dropping and the clouds are thickening.

🔧 Kevin23:42

Won't.

keep walking toward the cottage, headlamp beam swinging with each step

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wind. It's already shifting — can feel it in the air pressure against my face. The shed door's latch sticks if you don't seat it hard.

🌿 Jenny23:43

Right. Just watch the wind, the rain is coming.

Record the falling pressure in the notebook and head inside the kitchen to check the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
way and dismissive. He's too focused on the Yanmar to see the sky turning that.

🔧 Kevin23:44

Kevin — reach the cottage porch, set micrometer and bronze sleeve on the bench, pull the shed keys from pocket, walk to the shed and check the latch, seat it hard with heel of hand

💭 peek at the thought
Rain means the teak doubler cure gets complicated. Epoxy doesn't like moisture. But the mast step can't wait — another swell like last night and the split goes critical. I'll clamp it under the eaves where the overhang keeps the worst off.

🌿 Jenny23:45

Jenny — step into the kitchen, put the cast iron skillet on the stove, and start boiling the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's locking the tools. The wind would take them off the bench anyway.

🔧 Kevin23:46

Kevin — walk back to the cottage porch, pick up the bronze sleeve and micrometer, step inside the kitchen, set them on the workbench by the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Latch held. Good. The wind's picking up steady now — can hear it in the rigging of the radio mast. Barometer was 1015 at the shrine and falling. By morning it'll be under 1000 if this keeps tracking.

🌿 Jenny23:47

The stove is hot enough now.

Drop the limpets into the boiling water with the corned beef fat.

💭 peek at the thought
He's bringing them right into the heat. Maybe that'll help the seeds dry faster.
