← Day 113

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the keeper's cottage

Clearing the Pile

Kevin stacks the removed boards while Jenny prepares to fetch more water for the seedlings.

The midday heat is heavy, but the light onshore breeze breeze carries the scent of salt and vegetation as the tide rises steadily. The Yanmar housing sits on the dock bench, the bronze sleeve ready for the final heat-fit, while the heirloom seeds continue to dehydrate slowly on paper towels in the shaded kitchen.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You lean the splintered planks against the garden wall. The tide is just beginning to creep back toward the pilings.

🔧 Kevin00:10

Kevin — walk along the exposed pilings at water's edge, inspecting each for rot, movement, or marine borer damage

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Two planks down before the water comes back. That's the way — work with the tide, not against it. Need to check the pilings while they're still exposed, then get the new planks cut and bolted before dark.

🔧 Kevin00:14

Kevin — walk back to the workshop end of the dock, measure and mark the new planks from the stack under the tarp, cut them to length with the handsaw

💭 peek at the thought
Pilings look sound. No give when I lean into them. One shows some worm tracks near the mudline but it's superficial — seasoned greenheart, it'll outlast me. Tide's turning properly now. Time to cut the replacement planks and get them fastened.

🔧 Kevin00:18

Kevin — carry the cut planks to the gaps, position them, drive the galvanized carriage bolts through with the heavy hammer, tighten nuts with the wrench

💭 peek at the thought
Two planks cut clean, ends squared. Drilled the bolt holes to match the existing pattern. Tide's coming in steady — got maybe two hours before the dock's underwater at the far end. Need to get these bolted down now.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the keeper's cottage

You use a small mister to carefully hydrate the tomato and basil seedlings. The water in the tank is nearly full.

🌿 Jenny00:08

Stay dry, just for a little longer.

Wipe the condensation off the window glass and check the barometer again.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'll have to start rationing the corned beef immediately.

🌿 Jenny00:12

Jenny — pick up the pencil and return to sketching the salt glands on the sea beet's leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is holding for now, but the wind is shifting to the south.

🌿 Jenny00:16

Jenny — stand up and walk to the stove to check if the heirloom seeds are drying.

💭 peek at the thought
My way is growling again; I should check the tins of corned beef.
