Preparation for the tide

The tide is beginning its slow turn, and the water laps against the dock pilings as Kevin meets Jenny to discuss the plan for the evening.

The afternoon heat is heavy over the dock as the air thickens with the scent of salt and coming rain. The barometer holds a steady rise, but the overcast sky is darkening, suggesting a pressure shift. Kevin and Jenny focus on finishing final preparations before the supply boat arrives in ten days, working around the humidity that slows everything.

Tide's turning. Slack in twenty. You want to row out at 0700 if they're in the channel, or wait for a calmer day?

lean against the dock cleat, arms crossed, watching the water for the supply boat's running lights

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's turning. Slack water in about twenty minutes. Good window to row out if the supply boat shows early, but the swell's still up from yesterday. Need to decide if we're rowing out at 0700 regardless or waiting for a proper weather window. Also need to finish that sail leech tonight — last real job before the dinghy's properly done.

🌿 Jenny01:23

0700 is fine. I need to get back and move the trays inside before the air gets too heavy.

Jenny wipes her damp hands on her apron and looks toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If I wait for a calmer day, I might miss the window, and I need those supplies before the mold rots everything.

0700 it is. Barometer's still rising — 1026. If it holds overnight, we row out. If it drops, we wait. I'll check at 0530.

nod toward the cottage, push off the cleat and start walking back toward the garden path

💭 peek at the thought
She's avoiding the real question — whether we go out in this swell or not. But 0700 is the call. I'll check the barometer again at first light. If it's still rising, we go. If it's dropped, we don't. Simple. She's right about the trays though; humidity'll rot the seedlings fast.

🌿 Jenny01:25

I'll have the boat ready.

Jenny turns and walks back toward the cottage, her boots heavy on the uneven earth.

💭 peek at the thought
He trusts the barometer more than the soil, but I can feel the weight in the air.

Kevin — walk up the path to the cottage, pull the sail twine and palm from the porch shelf, sit on the step and start stitching the starboard leech

💭 peek at the thought
She said "I'll have the boat ready." Not "we'll get the boat ready." She's taking the lead on this. Fine by me — means she's decided we're going. Now I need to finish the starboard leech on the sail tonight so it's not flapping come morning. And check the Yanmar's oil one more time. The spline kit's installed but I haven't run it under load since.

🌿 Jenny01:27

Jenny — jenny enters the kitchen and begins moving the seedling trays an inch closer to the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already working on the sail while I'm still fighting the humidity.

🔧 Kevin01:28

Kevin — pull the sail needle through the heavy canvas, working the leech tight with the palm, stitch by stitch

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's settling the seedlings. The stove's warm but not hot — they'll like that. Air's thick, pressure holding. I can hear the stitches pulling tight on the sail. Three more inches on the leech and it'll hold shape in a blow. Should finish before dark. Then oil check, fuel check, make sure the oarlocks don't bind. Simple night.

🌿 Jenny01:29

( way)

Jenny pauses, hand hovering over a tray of heirloom tomatoes, as she watches the rhythm of his needle through the screen door.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on that canvas, like he could sew the whole island together if he tried.
