← Day 114

the keeper's cottage · day 114 · evening

The First Drops

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated tin roof of the cottage as the wind picks up from the north.

The evening air is heavy and humid as the trade wind maintains a steady breeze from the east. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks and tide pools of the southern flats under the 29°C heat. Inside the cottage, the smell of drying sea beet and curing mint lingers over the cast iron skillet on the stove.

🌿 Jenny01:31

Kevin, get the trays inside right now!

Jenny scoops up the seedling trays from the porch and carries them quickly to the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally, some water, but the humidity is going to kill those sprouts if they stay out here.

On it.

grab the oarlock bracket and spare spark plug from the porch, then secure the dinghy's stern line to the cleat with a rolling hitch and check the anchor rode for chafe

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here early. Barometer was steady but the sky doesn't care. Need the trays dry and the dinghy secured before the wind shifts harder.

🌿 Jenny01:32

Watch the line, the wind is picking up a gale!

Jenny sets the trays near the warm wood stove and begins checking the damp soil for mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast for once, I hope the wind doesn't catch the sail.

🔧 Kevin01:33

Checking the rode now. Cleat's holding.

pull the dinghy's anchor rode hand over hand to inspect for chafe at the bow roller and waterline, then double the stern line with a second turn on the cleat and a half hitch backup

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — gusts are hitting the dinghy broadside. The stern line's new but the cleat's old. If it parts we lose the boat.

🌿 Jenny01:35

Close the door tight, the spray is coming in.

Jenny opens the heirloom seed tin and begins sorting the damp seeds into small piles.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat misses us, I'm eating grass but salt and limpets.

🔧 Kevin01:35

Got it.

kick the wooden wedge into the door gap to seal it, then step to the window and watch the dinghy's bow ride the chop for any sign the anchor's dragging

💭 peek at the thought
Spray means the wind's backing northwest — fetching straight up the channel. Door's warped at the bottom; need the wedge.

🌿 Jenny01:36

Keep an eye on the boat, the tide is dropping.

Jenny picks up a pair of tweezers and begins to separate the viable seeds from the damp ones.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is howling through the stone now, I hope the roof holds.

🔧 Kevin01:37

Watching it.

stay at the window, counting the dinghy's surge period against the transom range marker I painted on the dock piling, ready to pull on oilskins and row out a second anchor if the swing radius widens past the third mark

💭 peek at the thought
Dropping tide on a northwest wind — the fetch shortens but the current opposes. Dinghy will surge at the anchor. If the rode snaps on the ebb, she'll end up on the rocks south of the dock.
