Evening preparations

The sun begins to dip, casting long shadows across the garden wall as the temperature drops slightly.

Kevin struggled with the damp sail canvas, his needle slipping and twine snagging repeatedly as he tried to stitch the starboard leech, making little progress. Jenny worked steadily at her notebook, producing detailed illustrations of the sea beet's salt gland structures under the wood stove light. A turtle came ashore on the beach in the darkness to nest, its tracks faint in the sand by morning.

The air is getting heavy again. I'm moving the trays inside before the rain hits.

picks up the seedling trays and carries them to the kitchen floor.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity doesn't drop, those heirloom seeds will rot before they even sprout.

Rain'll hold till after dark. Tank's at three-eighty-two, we're good.

Walk to the porch and check the generator fuel level, then secure the tarp over the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still climbing but the sky's bruising purple at the edges. She's right to move them — damp air and cold nights will rot tomato seedlings faster than drought.

🌿 Jenny01:40

I'll keep them here by the stove for now. The humidity is too high outside.

sets the trays down on the stone floor near the doorway and opens her notebook to sketch the sea beet's salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the numbers, never the way the damp feels in the air.

🔧 Kevin01:43

Generator's half a tank. Ran it smooth this morning with the new diaphragm.

Pull the dinghy sail from the porch corner and spread it on the kitchen table, thread the sail needle with twine, start stitching the starboard leech where it's frayed.

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the touch with plants, better than me. The stove warmth'll keep the soil from going sour overnight.

🌿 Jenny01:43

Good. Don't get any grease on the canvas, it's still damp.

picks up her pencil and begins shading the intricate structure of the salt glands on the page.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the generator is reliable; I need that power if the radio fails again.

🔧 Kevin01:44

Kevin — stitch the starboard leech in a flat seam, small even stitches, working from the foot up toward the head. Pause occasionally to smooth the damp cloth and check tension.

💭 peek at the thought
Hands are clean. Wiped them on the rag after the generator. She doesn't need to tell me twice.

🌿 Jenny01:45

That seam looks tight, Kevin. Don't pull the twine too hard.

leans over the notebook, capturing the minute crystalline structure of the sea beet's surface.

💭 peek at the thought
His focus is better when he's working with his hands, not when we talk.

🔧 Kevin01:46

It's holding.

Continue stitching the leech, easing tension slightly on each pull, keeping the seam flat against the damp canvas.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching closer than I thought. Twine's holding — just firm enough to lay flat without puckering.
