Evening Meal Preparations

The tide begins its slow turn back in as the breeze picks up slightly from the east.

Kevin retrieved the rat from the pantry trap and began preparing it for curing with salt. Jenny spent the afternoon sketching the crystalline structures of sea beet salt in her notebook while the pressure began to drop.

Tide's turning. Going to dress the rat and finish the sail before the rain hits.

walk to the kitchen, retrieve the rat carcass from the trap, and set it on the cutting board with the fillet knife

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's turning. Breeze backing east — that's the rain coming. Need to finish the sail stitching before the canvas gets damp again, and the rat needs dressing before the heat spoils it.

🌿 Jenny02:15

Don't forget to salt the meat, or it'll be tough.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins own the crystalline structure of the sea''s salt glands in the margin of her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the next task, never the way the light is hitting the water.

🔧 Kevin02:16

Salt's in the jar by the stove. I'll cure it proper.

pull the jar of dried sea salt from the shelf, sprinkle a generous handful over both sides of the rat meat, and work it in with thumb and forefinger

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the salt. Meat this lean goes stringy without it. I've got the sea salt from the tide pools dried in a jar — enough for a cure.

🌿 Jenny02:17

Use the coarse salt, the fine stuff dissolves too fast in the heat.

Jenny turns the page in her notebook, sketching the intricate, geometric patterns of the sea''s salt glands with obsessive precision.

💭 peek at the thought
He treats the food like he treats the engine—just another thing to be maintained.

🔧 Kevin02:18

Coarse jar's on the second shelf. I'll use that.

reach up to the second shelf, take down the coarse sea salt jar, and rub the larger crystals into the rat meat, pressing them into the grain

💭 peek at the thought
Coarse salt it is. The fine stuff's already clumped from humidity anyway. She notices everything.

🌿 Jenny02:19

Make sure you get into the fat, or it won't take the flavor.

Jenny leans over her notebook, pencil shading the way the salt crystals would catch the light if they were still on the meat.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the salt he doesn't notice the clouds are thickening.

🔧 Kevin02:20

Not much fat on this one. What's there I'll hit.

work the coarse salt into the thin fat cap along the loin and around the kidneys, then set the meat on the wire rack over the tray to cure

💭 peek at the thought
There's not much fat on a rat, but what's there is around the kidneys and along the loin. She's right — cure misses the fat, the flavour misses the meat.

🌿 Jenny02:21

Let it sit. The salt will pull the moisture out slow.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins sketching the cross-section of the rat meat, noting how the salt crystals would interact with the muscle fibers.

💭 peek at the thought
He's efficient, I'll give him that. Even if quiet.

🔧 Kevin02:24

Twenty minutes. I'll stitch the leech while it cures.

walk to the porch, pick up the damp sail and sail needle, wax the twine against the beeswax block, and begin stitching the starboard leech where the tension pulled uneven

💭 peek at the thought
Salt needs time. Twenty minutes while I stitch the sail. Canvas is still damp from handling — twine'll drag if I don't wax it first.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:25

Don't pull too tight or the canvas will pucker when it dries.

Jenny opens a fresh page and begins sketching the morphology of the sea beet leaves she gathered earlier, focusing on the salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
His hands are steady with that needle. I wish mine own that focused.
