A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The midday sun is heavy over the cottage, though a light onshore breeze offers a reprieve from the heat. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the sandbars near the cove. Inside, the air smells of drying sea beet and salt-washed wood.

Limpets are ready. Finally.

Pick up the cast iron skillet and move it to the kitchen table. Drain the boiled limpets into the sink.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm starving and my stomach is growling louder than the wind. I need those limpets before I lose my focus.

Thanks.

pull out a chair and sit at the kitchen table

Finally some proper food. Smells good too — corned beef fat and sea.

Eat. You'd be starving.

Put a handful of limpets on a plate and slide it in front of him. Sit down and start my own portion.

He's just sitting there like he's part of the furniture.

Kevin — pick up a limpet with fingers, pull the foot free, and eat it; reach for another

💭 peek at the thought
Not going to argue with that. Hands are shaking a little — fuel and adrenaline wearing off.

🌿 Jenny02:12

They're a bit tough. I should have boiled them longer.

Pick up a limpet for myself and chew slowly, watching the steam rise in the morning light.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's eating. I'm still thinking about those sea beet sketches, though.

They're good. Salt and fat — what more you need.

keep eating, wiping fingers on a rag between handfuls

💭 peek at the thought
They're fine. Chewy's better than gone.
