A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The heavy humid air hangs over the cottage as the barometer continues its slow drop. Kevin focuses on inspecting the radio aerial for further damage beyond the shattered insulator. Jenny manages the heirloom seed trays, checking the moisture levels in the oppressive heat.

🔧 Kevin03:04

Kevin — walk into the kitchen, set the skillet back on the stove, and open a tin of corned beef.

💭 peek at the thought
Back at the cottage. The heat's settling in the stone. Need to eat something before the light goes.

🌿 Jenny03:05

The barometer is dropping. Rain's coming early.

Pick up my pencil and start sketching the salt glands on the sea

💭 peek at the thought
He's eating again. The salt from that tin is going to coat the whole room.

How far down?

Slice the corned beef into the hot skillet, fat rendering.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been watching it closer than I have. The needle's been lazy all afternoon.

🌿 Jenny03:07

Just past the low ridge. The salt glands are clearest there.

Keep sketching, not looking up from the sea beet morphology.

💭 peek at the thought
He's asking about the tide, but I'm thinking about the soil.

🔧 Kevin03:08

Right. Aerial first, then eat.

Wipe hands on a rag, grab the roll of self-amalgamating tape and the spare insulator from the porch shelf, head out to the radio mast.

💭 peek at the thought
Past the low ridge means under 1015. She's calling it before the glass does. The salt glands can wait — the radio aerial needs securing before the wind backs.
