The Morning Debris
Kevin and Jenny stand on the newly replaced planks as the tide begins to reclaim the shore. A heavy, waterlogged wooden crate thuds against the pilings, driven in by the rising swell.
The morning air is heavy with humidity, the overcast sky pressing low over the island. At the dock, the tide is high, lapping rhythmically against the reinforced planks and partially submerging the lower steps of the pier. The smell of drying sea beet and wood smoke lingers in the air as the day begins under the oppressive heat.
Grab the boat hook. I'll get the crowbar.
walk to the end of the dock and lean over to hook the crate with the boat hook, bracing against the cleat

Careful, the planks are still slick from the spray.
Reach for the boat hook and wedge it into the gap of the crate, pulling with my weight toward the dock.

I've got the bar. On three—pull hard and I'll lever it up onto the planks.
wedge the crowbar under the crate's edge and heave upward as Jenny pulls, using my body weight to drive the leverage

One, two, three!
Pull the boat hook with everything I have, digging my heels into the wet wood of the dock.

Got it. Slide it in. Watch your foot.
shove the crowbar deeper for purchase and drive the crate up onto the dock planks, then kick the bar clear and drag the crate toward the cottage by its rope handles

Help me get it to the porch before the next wave hits.
Grab the other end of the rope and haul the crate across the wood, panting against the wind.
