The Approaching Squ

The wind finally picks up, carrying the scent of salt and heavy rain. Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the first heavy drops hit the tin roof.

Kevin and Jenny moved the heirloom seed trays from the porch into the kitchen to protect them from the worsening rain. They arranged the trays on the table and checked the soil moisture to ensure the delicate seedlings remained viable.

🌿 Jenny03:09

The barometer is dropping fast. We need to get the trays inside before the wind shifts.

Move the seed trays from the porch to the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is finally coming; I hope the tank can handle it if the storm really breaks.

Table's clear. Radio log's on the bench — I'll shift it.

Walk to the porch, gather the three seed trays (heirloom tomato, pepper, basil, lettuce — 30 cells total, damp but viable), carry them inside, and set them on the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropped three millibars since I checked it this morning. Wind backing east-northeast — she's right, the porch overhang won't hold against a driving rain from that quarter. The trays go on the kitchen table, but that puts them right under the roof leak above the stove. Need to move the radio log first.

🌿 Jenny03:11

Careful with the basil tray, the seedlings are still fragile.

Clear a space on the table for the log and arrange the trays away from the draft.

💭 peek at the thought
He's helping for once, but his hands are rough; those seeds are my grandmother's legacy.

Basil's down. Peppers next?

Set the basil tray carefully on the table near the stove end, then lift the pepper tray and place it beside it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's got a system already — tomatoes center, peppers flank, basil nearest the stove for warmth, lettuce toward the window. Smart. My thumbs are still salt-stiff from the sail stitching; I set the basil tray down like it's a live grenade.

🌿 Jenny03:13

yeah. Put the lettuce in the back, away from the window.

adjust the position of the trays and check the moisture in the soil.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's moving, even if the silence is still heavier than the storm outside.

🔧 Kevin03:14

Lettuce at the back. Tomatoes center?

Place the lettuce tray at the far end of the table, then set the tomato tray in the center. Wipe salt-sweat from my forehead with the back of my hand.

💭 peek at the thought
Lettuce bolts in heat. Back of the table's cooler, less light — she's thinking three days ahead. The rain's hammering the roof now, proper drumroll. Through the window I can see the dock planks disappearing under white water. Wind's shifted hard northeast.

🌿 Jenny03:15

Good. Just keep them away from the edge, the stove is hot.

Reach for my notebook to record the moisture levels.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually listening for once. I hope he doesn't knock them over.

🔧 Kevin03:16

Notebook's got sea beet work in the front. Blank pages after page twelve.

Step back from the table, lean against the counter, and watch the rain lash the porch window.

💭 peek at the thought
She's reaching for the notebook with the sea beet sketches — the one with the salt gland illustrations I spent three hours on. The pages are still damp at the edges from my thumbs. She doesn't ask. Just opens it to a blank sheet and starts writing. The stove throws heat against my shins. Outside, something hits the cottage wall hard — a branch, maybe, or a loose dock plank.
