The Gathering Storm

The heavy air finally breaks as the first gust of wind hits the north cliffs, rattling the radio mast wires.

The heavy humid air hangs over the cottage as the pressure begins its slow drop. Jenny spends the afternoon securing the seed trays against the coming humidity while Kevin focuses on the radio mast's structural integrity.

🌿 Jenny04:38

The barometer is dropping fast, Kevin. We need to secure the tarp before the rain starts.

Walk to the porch, grab the seed trays, and move them under the shade cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally, the pressure is moving; if this storm hits, I need to get the seed trays under the porch.

On it. Generator cover first — tarp's no good if the fuel gets wet.

Walk to the porch, pull the plastic tarp tight over the generator and fuel can, secure the corners with bungee cords and rope.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's dropped another 5 hPa since noon — front's moving faster than I thought. Seed trays first, then the tarp and generator. Mast wires singing means we've got forty minutes, maybe less.

I'll get the sea beets inside. If the wind picks up, the sketches will blow away.

Pick up the seed trays and carry them to the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's faster than I thought, but the seeds are the priority right now before the humidity spikes.

Grab the notebook too. I'll check the mast guys and the aerial lead-in.

Walk to the radio mast base, inspect the guy rope tension and the self-amalgamating tape on the porcelain insulator, tighten any slack.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's thinking ahead — notebook and sketches are the only record we've got. Wind's backing southwest, gusting harder. Mast wires are humming now. Need to check the aerial insulator I taped yesterday; if that goes, we lose comms.

🌿 Jenny04:42

Be careful with the wire, the wind is starting to catch the sail.

Grab the notebook from the porch and tuck it under the seed trays on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If that aerial comes down, I'm completely cut off from Tom for another week.

Sail's not tied down. Getting it now.

Walk to the dinghy at the dock, gather the damp sail off the spruce spar, roll it tight, and lash it to the thwart with the new rope.

💭 peek at the thought
She means the dinghy sail — I left it draped over the mast step to dry. Wind's already lifting the leech. If it catches a gust wrong, it'll tear the fresh stitching or pull the spar out of the step. Mast guys are holding but the insulator tape's bubbling at the top edge; moisture getting under. Need to re-wrap before the rain hits proper.

🌿 Jenny04:44

Hurry! I'm locking the kitchen windows!

Run to the window, slam shut and latch the stone frame.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up speed; if that sail catches a gust, it'll rip the mast.

🔧 Kevin04:44

Got it. Back in thirty seconds.

Jog back up the dock path to the cottage porch, grab the roll of self-amalgamating tape from the shelf, climb the mast base ladder, strip the bubbling tape off the porcelain insulator, and re-wrap it clean and tight with two full overlappin

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's hitting the dock planks — big drops, sporadic. Squall line's visible over the north cliffs, dark as bruised plum. Sail's heavy with damp; spar's still tacky at the scarf. Got it bundled and lashed. Mast guys singing louder now. Insulator tape won't hold in driving rain. Need to get back, re-wrap it with the good self-amalgamating tape from the porch shelf, then secure the porch door and shutters.
