← Day 119

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the keeper's cottage

The Afternoon Lull

Kevin is at the dock inspecting the receding waterline, while Jenny is at the cottage tending the seedlings.

The rain continues as a steady, rhythmic drumming against the kitchen roof, saturating the island. The water tank has finally reached its absolute 400-litre capacity, overflowing slightly onto the mud at the base. The dock is slick, and the air smells of wet earth and salt.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You gather the crowbar to check for anything the tide might have brought up to the low rocks.

🔧 Kevin05:34

Kevin — walk to the end of the dock, step down onto the exposed rock shelf, crowbar in hand

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's out far enough to see the rock shelf beyond the pilings. Might be something useful washed up — timber, rope, maybe another crate. Crowbar's good for prying and leverage if something's wedged.

🔧 Kevin05:38

Kevin — pry the rope free with the crowbar, coil it, grab the oak plank, head back up the dock to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Found a length of half-inch three-strand rope caught in a rock crevice — looks new, not salt-rotted. Also a piece of white oak planking, maybe eight feet, clean grain, no worm holes. Could use that for the spar if the spruce doesn't hold. Tide's turning, need to get back before the rocks get slick.

🔧 Kevin05:42

Kevin — carry the oak plank and coiled rope up to the cottage porch, set them down out of the rain, wipe hands on trousers

💭 peek at the thought
Oak plank's heavy, rope's dry and sound. Good find. The spruce spar's still got that open split at the mast step — epoxy never cured right in this humidity. If I scarf the oak into it proper, with a hardwood doubler and through-bolts, it'll hold the wind generator. But first I need to get the oak inside, let it acclimate, and figure the scarf geometry. Hands are tired from the crowbar work.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the keeper's cottage

You move to the kitchen to prepare the next batch of seeds for the afternoon sun.

🌿 Jenny05:32

Come on, you little things.

Open the heirloom seed tin and spread a handful of seeds on a dry paper towel to inspect for mold.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get these started now, the humidity will just rot them before the boat even arrives.

🌿 Jenny05:36

Not today you fail me.

Sketch a few of the healthiest seeds in the notebook to note their shape and color.

💭 peek at the thought
Most of these look clean, but that dampness in the tin is a real threat.

🌿 Jenny05:40

Jenny — walk to the kitchen shelf and check the remaining tins of corned beef.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is starting to growl again; I need something more than those salty limpets.
