The Evening Huddle

The rain slows to a drizzle as the light fades. Kevin and Jenny retreat indoors to the warmth of the stove to plan for the supply boat.

Kevin spends the evening drafting a supply list at the kitchen table while the rain drums against the roof. Jenny meticulously inspects the heirloom seed trays, ensuring the damp soil hasn't developed any mold despite the high humidity.

Stove's drawing well. Put the kettle on while I get the notebook.

walk to the kitchen shelf, retrieve the notebook and a pencil, set them on the table, then fill the kettle from the tank tap and set it on the wood stove

💭 peek at the thought
The rain easing is a small mercy. Need to use the light we have left to sort the supply list properly — last time we missed things because we rushed it by lantern.

🌿 Jenny05:44

The barometer is dropping. I'll check the trays one last time.

Jenny sits at the kitchen table, pressing a finger into the soil of a seed tray to check for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm hungry enough to eat my own sketches, but the limpets are still in the pot.

Barometer's at 1007 and still falling. Southwest swell building if the wind holds.

sit opposite her at the table, open the notebook to a fresh page, write "Supply Boat List" at the top, then start listing under columns: FOOD, FUEL, PARTS, MEDICAL, OTHER

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Good. The trays matter more than she lets on.

🌿 Jenny05:47

We need more tinned veg and maybe some self-amalgamating tape for the mast.

Jenny leans over the notebook, pencil in hand, and adds "Mackerel, way Beef, Flour" under the food column.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in five days, we'll be out of flour and coffee.

🔧 Kevin05:48

Add coffee. And salt. The last bag's damp.

write "Coffee, Salt" under FOOD, then "Self-amalgamating tape (2 rolls)" under PARTS, then "Thyroid meds (3 months)" under MEDICAL, hand her the pencil

💭 peek at the thought
Self-amalgamating tape for the mast means she's thinking ahead on the wind generator. Smart. Mackerel and corned beef are protein we can stretch. Flour's been a problem — rats got the last sack.

🌿 Jenny05:48

I'll add them. We need a lot of extra salt, too.

Jenny takes the pencil and writes "Coffee" and "Salt" on the list, then slides the notebook back to Kevin.

💭 peek at the thought
My way is growling louder than the rain. It's pathetic.

🔧 Kevin05:50

Got it. Salt, coffee, tape, thyroid meds, mackerel, corned beef, flour. Now the boat — what do we absolutely need to get off this rock if it comes to that?

take the notebook, write under OTHER: "Medevac forms (signed)", "Dinghy oars (2)", "Patch kit (epoxy, fibreglass)", "Spare spark plug", "Water test strips (6)", "Compass (backup)", then look up: "Anything you're worried we're forgetting?"

💭 peek at the thought
Salt for preserving, for the rats, for the thyroid. She's thinking in layers.

🌿 Jenny05:50

A proper radio. And more antibiotics. The first kit is getting thin.

Jenny writes "Antibiotics" and "First aid kit refill" under MEDICAL, then looks at the kettle on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If we have to leave, I'm not leaving the seed tin behind.
