The Storm Breaks

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the rain turns into a heavy downpour. The wind begins to rattle the shutters of the cottage.

The steady rain continues to drum against the roof of the cottage, a relentless rhythm that slows the morning chores. Inside, the air is humid with the smell of damp earth and drying herbs while the water tank groans as it nears its four-litre capacity.

Wind's southeast. Shutters won't hold if it backs southwest.

Walk to the porch and check the lashing on the generator tarp, then secure the radio mast guys.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifted. That rattle in the shutters means southeast, building. Barometer at 1007 and steady — steady's worse than falling, means the low's sitting on us.

I'll move the trays away from the wall. The draft is too cold.

Move the seed trays to the center of the kitchen, away from the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; he's worried about wood while the seeds are drowning in the air.

🔧 Kevin05:54

Frame's warped. I'll wedge it after.

Step out onto the porch into the rain, pull the radio mast guys tight at the cleats, check the generator tarp's still holding.

💭 peek at the thought
Cold draft means the window seal's gone or the frame's shifted. Check it after the mast guys.

🌿 Jenny05:54

Take the lantern. The rain is coming down in sheets.

Grab the heavy oilskin from the hook and hand it to him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked. That wood is already too soft from the salt.

🔧 Kevin05:56

Thanks.

Take the oilskin, pull it on over wet shirt, grab the hurricane lantern from the shelf, light it with a match from the tin, step back out into the sheeting rain.

💭 peek at the thought
Oilskin's stiff with salt. She noticed the rain before I did — or noticed I didn't.

🌿 Jenny05:57

Be careful on the deck! The boards are slick!

Walk to the window and watch him battle with the tarp in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wind catches the sail, the whole thing is gone. I need to check the tank level.

🔧 Kevin05:58

Grommet's gone on the genny corner. Tying it off with rope.

Work the lantern hook over the porch rail, free both hands, haul the tarp corner down, lash it tight to the cleat with a length of the new three-strand from the coil on the porch, cinch it with a trucker's hitch, test the tension.

💭 peek at the thought
She watches. Always watches. Boards are slick — salt and algae, I know. Lantern throws a weak circle, mast guys humming in the gusts. Tarp's flapping hard on the generator side, one grommet torn.

🌿 Jenny05:58

The tide is hitting the dock! Watch your step!

Trace the edge of a sea beet leaf sketch in my notebook, hand shaking slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to lose a finger if that wrench slips. The barometer is screaming at me now.
