The Rising Wind

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the wind picks up, the first gusts of a storm gathering over the island. The barometer continues to drop rapidly.

The heat is a physical weight against the cottage, the air still and smelling of salt and drying kelp. The tide climbs steadily against the dock pilings, lapping at the hull of the dinghy as the barometer holds steady, though the humidity in the air suggests a shift in the atmosphere.

Front's moving faster than the glass said. We batten down now.

walk up to the cottage porch and start securing the loose shade cloth roll with the spare line

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropping like a stone. Wind's already turning cold. We've got maybe two hours before this hits proper. Need to secure the dinghy, check the radio battery, and get the porch shutters dogged down.

I'll get the seed packets inside.

Grab the drying heirloom seeds from the porch screens and hurry them into the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
My skin is humming from the heat, but the wind is finally shifting. We need to move fast or the garden will be a disaster.

🔧 Kevin07:52

Radio battery at sixty. I'll top it off from the wind genny before the gusts hit thirty.

uncoil the replacement stern line and move toward the dock to secure the dinghy bow and stern to the cleats with extra scope

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's thinking ahead. Seeds first — they're irreplaceable. I'll handle the heavy gear outside while she secures the inside.

Don't forget the fenders!

Walk to the porch and pull the heavy wooden shutters closed over the bedroom window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. If he doesn't double-check the knots in this wind, the surge will just rip the cleats out.

🔧 Kevin07:54

On it.

duck under the dock planking, haul out the two tire fenders, and hang them port and starboard on the dinghy before snubbing the stern line tight to the cleat

💭 peek at the thought
Fenders. Right. The old tire fenders are still in the locker under the dock planking. Dinghy'll pound itself to kindling against the pilings without them.

🌿 Jenny07:54

I'm locking the door!

Slide the heavy iron bolt across the front door and lean against it, listening to the wind whistle through the eaves.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's listening. The air feels electric—that heavy, metallic smell before the rain breaks.

🔧 Kevin07:56

Shorting the wind genny. Then radio check.

climb the short ladder to the wind generator pole, throw the brake switch to short the turbine, and clip the safety line to the pole bracket

💭 peek at the thought
Door's dogged. Shutters closed. Seeds safe. Dinghy double-lined with fenders. Now the radio, then the generator leads — if the wind genny overspeeds in this it'll fry the batteries. Need to short the turbine or feather it.

🌿 Jenny07:56

way back, Kevin! The sky is turning bruised!

Move to the kitchen and check the rain tank intake for debris.

💭 peek at the thought
The turbine is spinning too fast. I hope the bolts hold against these gusts.
