← Day 12

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday barometer check and engine test

Kevin is at the dock preparing to run the Yanmar on muffs; Jenny is on the north cliffs logging the barometer at noon.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine on the muffs, but the sloppy float needle caused a fuel leak under pressure. Jenny inspected the spruce spar and found the epoxy remained tacky and the split at the mast step still open despite the heat.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You connect the muffs to the Yanmar's raw water intake, prime the fuel, and hit the starter. The engine coughs, catches, and settles into a rough idle. You watch the tell-tale stream — weak but steady. The replacement float needle leaks slightly at the seat, just as before. You adjust the idle screw, listening.

Kevin — let the Yanmar warm up on muffs, watching the tell-tale and listening for the idle to settle; log barometer reading at noon

💭 peek at the thought
Float needle still weeping. Rough idle won't smooth out until that seats proper. Might have to lap it or order a genuine Yanmar part — this lathe-turned one's never going to hold. Tell-tale's flowing though. Compression's good. She'll run, just not clean at idle.

🔧 Kevin07:38

Kevin — shut down the Yanmar, disconnect muffs, wipe down the block; walk back to the cottage and log the noon barometer reading — 1031 hPa, falling slow

💭 peek at the thought
Engine's warmed through. Idle's steadier now — metal's expanded, needle's seating better with heat. Still a faint miss every few seconds. Good enough for now. Barometer's dropped another millibar since morning. Supply boat window holding but narrowing.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You pull the barometer from your pack and tap the glass. The needle hasn't moved: 1032 hPa, steady. You open the notebook, date the entry, and record the pressure, time, and sky — clear, bright, no cloud. The supply boat is due in two days. You scan the horizon again. Nothing.

🌿 Jenny07:36

Jenny — pack the barometer and notebook, then start the walk back down toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is starting to gnaw. I can't believe I forgot to actually eat those limpets before I left.

🌿 Jenny07:40

Jenny — walk into the cottage and head straight for the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope Kevin didn't spend the whole time at the dock just staring at the water. We need to actually finish the garden barriers before another crab decides the tomatoes are a buffet.
