Preparing the evening meal
Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the sun dips. The smell of salt and searing shells fills the air as they prepare the limpets.
The evening heat lingers heavy over the shrine as the tide begins to lap against the lower stones. The meal of limpets is finished, leaving the scent of salt and rendered fat in the air while the water level rises toward the carved initials.
Got a decent haul. Two dozen, maybe three. Fat ones off the north ledge.
Set the bucket on the scrubbed table, pull the cast iron skillet from the stove hook, and wipe it clean with a rag.

I'll get the water. We need to soak them out first.
Walk to the sink, fill the ceramic basin, and begin scrubbing the grit from the limpets.

Kevin — take the skillet to the stove, open the damper, and lay in a slab of the corned beef fat from the tin. Let it render slow while the water heats.

Don't burn it. We just need enough to sear the meat.
Drop the first handful of limpets into the cold water and watch the shells loosen.

Kevin — ease the skillet off direct flame, tilt it so the fat pools thin. Watch the ripple. When it shimmers, drop in a test limpet — listen for the right hiss.

It's ready.
Lift the first limpet from the water and pat it dry on the cloth before adding it to the pan.

Kevin — feed the rest in steady, shell-down, crowding the pan but not stacking. Let the edges curl brown. Smell turns sweet — brine and rendered fat. Flip each once with the fork.

Eat while they are hot.
Plate the limpets on the chipped ceramic, and sprinkle the dried sea beet over them.
