A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The midday heat is heavy as the tide recedes, exposing the rocky pools. Kevin focuses on the dinghy sail, struggling with the uneven tension of the damp canvas, while Jenny manages the seed trays in the shade of the cottage porch.

🔧 Kevin07:28

Kevin — walk into the kitchen, set the sextant case on the table, and check the spruce spar leaning against the wall — press a thumbnail into the epoxy at the scarf joint

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage feels cooler than the garden. Good to be out of the sun. Need to check the spar epoxy — still tacky this morning, but the heat might've cured it by now. And the radio check's due.

🌿 Jenny07:28

It hasn't cured yet. Don't stress it.

Pick up the notebook and sketch the way the wood grain curves around the scar.

💭 peek at the thought
The epoxy is still way; the humidity is holding it back, or I'm just impatient.

🔧 Kevin07:30

Didn't expect it to. Two days in this heat, figured it'd be glass by now.

wipe a thumb across the epoxy bead, feel the drag, then move to the radio shelf and flip the power switch

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Tacky still. Rushing it won't help. The grain's clean though — beach spruce held straight.

🌿 Jenny07:30

The humidity is too high. It doesn't want to set.

Listen to the static on the radio, waiting for a signal from the mainland.

💭 peek at the thought
It's the salt in the air; it gets into everything and slows things down.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:32

Might tent it tonight. Halogen lamp under the tarp — dry the air local.

turn the squelch knob, let the static climb, then settle on the trust's working frequency and key the mic

💭 peek at the thought
Humidity's been brutal. Barometer's steady at 1009 — should mean dry air, but the sea keeps it thick. Epoxy needs below 80% to kick proper. Might need to tent it with the tarp and run a lamp under for heat.

🌿 Jenny07:32

Just make sure there's airflow. You'll cook the seedlings.

Walk to the seed trays and check the soil for any sign of white fuzz.

💭 peek at the thought
If he tents it, the heat will just bake the mold into the fibers.

🔧 Kevin07:34

Won't. Gap at the bottom. Chimney effect.

key the mic again, wait for the carrier tone, then speak into it — "Sorrel Island, weekly check. Day one-two-one. Two persons well. Water three-seven-nine litres. Food adequate.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Seedlings on the counter, spar by the wall — both need air, both need heat. Can't cook one to save the other.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:34

The boat is in three days. We need to finish the inventory.

Record the barometer reading in the log—1006 hPa and falling.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the chimney effect, at least he's thinking for once.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:36

Barometer reads 1009 on the dial. Steady. You seeing different?

release the mic, wait for a reply, one hand on the squelch

💭 peek at the thought
She wrote 1006. I read 1009 on the dial this morning. One of us is wrong, or it's moved fast. Falling pressure means the forecast holds — Force 8, northwest. Boat won't make it in three days. Not in that.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:37

It's 1006. Something's coming in.

Walk to the porch and look at the clouds on the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
It's dropping. I can feel the shift in my knees before the needle moves.
