Morning Tide Inspection
Kevin inspects the new stern line on the dinghy while the sun warms the salt planks. Jenny sits on the edge, sorting the dried sea beet and checking the tide charts in the notebook.
Kevin inspects the dock planks for signs of rot as the tide begins to climb the structure. Jenny focuses on the heirloom seed trays, checking the moisture levels of the soil in the morning heat.
The line looks solid, Kevin, but check the cleat on the dock again once the tide actually starts to pull.
Make a detailed sketch of the sea beet's root structure in the notebook to capture the salt storage cells just in case the samples degrade.

Cleat's held three winters. But I'll check the bolts when the water's on them.
walk to the dock cleat and examine the lag bolts where they bite into the timber, tapping each with the handle of the crowbar to hear if any sound hollow

If the wood is soft, the whole thing comes down when the boat hits a swell.
Stand up and walk to the seed tin to check the moisture levels of the grandmother's heirloom seeds.

The starboard bolt's been singing hollow for a month. Need to drift a new one deeper or sister it with a through-bolt.
crouch at the cleat and drive the crowbar tip under the starboard lag bolt head, levering gently to test movement in the timber

Starboard's loose. Timber's punky three inches in. Through-bolt and plate, or she pulls clean.
stand and walk back to the cottage to fetch the 12mm drill bit, stainless through-bolt, washers, nyloc nut, and a hardwood offcut for a backing plate

Use the backing plate. Don't just tighten the bolt, or it'll just pull through the rot.
Open the seed tin and inspect the heirloom packets for any sign of dampness or mold.

Plate's cut. Oak offcut from the mast doubler. Twelve mil hole, countersunk both sides.
return to the dock with the drill bit, through-bolt, washers, nyloc nut, and oak backing plate, then kneel at the cleat and drill through the starboard lag bolt hole, driving the bit straight through the rotten timber and out the underside

Make sure the plate is flush. I don't want it splitting the grain.
Open the seed tin and inspect the enough packets for any sign of dampness or mold.

Countersinking it. Washer and nut seat flat, plate bears even.
flip the drill to the countersink bit and chamfer both sides of the through-hole, then slide the stainless bolt up from underneath, seat the oak backing plate and washer on top, and thread the nyloc nut down by hand until it bites
