← Day 122

the dock · day 122 · evening

Evening tide approaches

The sun begins to dip, and the wind starts to turn back toward the shore.

The tide is rising steadily against the dock, and the air remains heavy with the 31°C dry heat. Kevin and Jenny are working to secure the dinghy and the heavy spruce spar before the light fades and a potential evening squall sets in.

🔧 Kevin08:48

Wind's turning. We should lash the dinghy tight and get the spruce spar inside before dark.

walk up to the dinghy and check the mooring lines, then secure the stern line with an extra half-hitch to the cleat

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifting onshore. Tide's rising and the barometer's still falling. Weather's coming in tonight or tomorrow. Need to secure the dinghy proper and get the spar under cover before it gets wet again.

🌿 Jenny08:48

I'll get the spar. Just don't over-tension the lines or the surge will snap the cleat.

walk over to the spruce spar and begin dragging it toward the cottage porch.

💭 peek at the thought
1009 hPa and falling. The air is too still, too heavy. He's right about the spar; if the wind catches it, it'll be a projectile.

🔧 Kevin08:50

Spring line to the piling. Let her breathe.

uncoil the new half-inch three-strand from the porch, run a spring line from the dinghy's bow cleat back to the dock piling, and take up the slack without cinching it drum-tight

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the cleat. Old timber, salt-eaten. Surge load could rip it clean out. Better to run a spring line to the piling and let the boat ride.

🌿 Jenny08:51

The limpets are done. I'm going inside to eat.

drop the spruce spar against the cottage wall and walk toward the kitchen to take the pot off the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the mechanics of staying, while I'm thinking about the rot in the wood. If the barometer drops further, the dock won't matter.

🔧 Kevin08:52

Right behind you.

cast a last look at the dinghy lines, then follow Jenny into the cottage kitchen

💭 peek at the thought
Supper's ready. My stomach's been growling since noon. Need to eat, then check the radio before the front hits.

🌿 Jenny08:52

Jenny — set the pot of boiled limpets on the table and start serving them into a bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my hands are shaking. I need to check the seed tin again tomorrow—the humidity is getting to the heirloom packets.

🔧 Kevin08:54

Smells good.

pull out the wooden chair, sit down, and start eating the limpets with a fork, chasing them with a swallow of water from the tin cup

💭 peek at the thought
Food on the table. Finally. The limpets smell of brine and corned beef fat — simple, honest fuel. Radio check after, then see what the shortwave picks up with this pressure dropping.

🌿 Jenny08:54

The barometer is still falling. We should probably check the seals on the seed trays before we turn in.

scoop a small portion of limpets into a bowl and sit down slowly, leaning back in the chair.

💭 peek at the thought
He eats so fast. I can't even focus on the taste; I just keep thinking about the pressure drop. 1009 hPa. It's not a storm yet, but it's coming.

🔧 Kevin08:56

Radio first. Then seed trays. Eat while it's hot.

keep eating, cleaning the bowl, then set it aside and reach for the shortwave radio handset on the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow. The ankle's still bothering her. Barometer dropping means damp air — seed trays'll sweat if the seals aren't tight. I'll check them after the radio.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:56

The insulator is shattered, Kevin. You're just talking to the air.

eat a few limpets slowly, chewing carefully, and watch him handle the handset.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always in a hurry to check the outside world. The radio aerial is still a mess—he's just going to hear static and frustration.
