← Day 122

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

The Tide Ebbs

Kevin is at the dock while Jenny is on the north cliffs.

The tide continues its retreat, exposing the slick, dark algae on the dock planks. Kevin has the Yanmar idling on the muffs, the vibration thrumming through the wood as he watches the carburetor for leaks. In the kitchen, the smell of briny limpets fills the air as Jenny monitors the steam from the pot.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

The water has reached its peak and is beginning to slow. You notice a piece of debris caught in the submerged-dock planks.

🔧 Kevin08:28

Kevin — wade into the shallow water at the dock, reach down, and pull the debris free from between the planks, then toss it onto the dock to inspect later.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's turning. That debris—probably a piece of net or a broken buoy—could snag the mooring or wear the planks faster. Best to clear it before it works loose and causes more damage.

🔧 Kevin08:32

Kevin — coil the blue rope and carry it up to the porch, then walk back to the cottage to check the barometer on the kitchen wall.

💭 peek at the thought
Debris cleared — just a tangled wad of blue polypropylene rope, salt-crusted and stiff. Useless for load-bearing but might serve as chafe guard if I strip the outer fibers. Tide's ebbing now, water pulling away from the jetty. Quiet out here without Jenny. The radio in the cottage will be squawking static on the hour. Should check the barometer again, see if the pressure's holding.

🔧 Kevin08:36

Kevin — walk to the shed, haul the Yanmar onto the muffs, connect the water hose, prime the fuel, and start it — let it warm at idle, then throttle to 2800 RPM and hold, eyes on the carburetor float bowl for any fuel seep.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer reads 1009 hPa, steady. No sudden drop, no climb. The air feels heavier than the numbers say — smell of rain in the kelp and wet stone. Supply boat's due in two days. If a front's building, it'll push the schedule. Engine's the priority: Yanmar's float needle held at idle, but I never ran it under proper load after the lapping. Need to fire it on the muffs, bring it to 2800 RPM, watch the carb for weep. If it holds, the dinghy has a heart. If not, I'm rowing.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

The wind picks up as the afternoon shifts. You pack your gear to head down before the tide begins to drop.

🌿 Jenny08:30

Jenny — close the notebook, tuck it into the waterproof bag, and begin the descent down the cliff path toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get down now, the ledges will be too way to navigate in the dark.

🌿 Jenny08:34

Jenny — walk the final stretch of the path and enter the cottage, heading straight for the kitchen to start the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is actually growling now. I can almost taste the salt and the corned beef fat.

🌿 Jenny08:38

Kevin?

Stir the pot of boiling limpets and glance out the window toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
It's too quiet. Kevin should have been back from the dock by now if he's finished with the mooring check.
