Midday check

Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock as the sun reaches its peak. The tide has now reached the lower edge of the deck.

Kevin spends the morning at the dock inspecting the dinghy's mooring line against the high tide. Jenny heads to the north cliffs to document the salt glands of the sea beet specimens in her notebook.

🌿 Jenny08:14

The water is right at the wood. We shouldn't go out to the dinghy yet.

Steps back from the edge of the jetty and points to the swirling water lapping the timber.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is too high for the rotten planks; if I step out now, I'll go straight into the own.

🔧 Kevin08:16

Aye. Let her rise a bit more. Give it twenty minutes and the slack'll be out of the line.

lean against the sound plank, watching the water climb the pilings, one hand resting on the crowbar

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's climbing faster than I expected. Dinghy's still tied off at the end — if the swell picks up it'll pound against the pilings. Need to check the stern line chafe and the mooring ring before we leave it.

🌿 Jenny08:17

Twenty minutes. I'll check the moisture in the tin again while we wait.

Pulls the notebook from her waist and begins to sketch the salt glands on a sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes is an eternity when the stomach is empty, but the wood is soft like sponge.

🔧 Kevin08:20

Right. I'll walk the line, check the chafe at the ring.

step onto the soundest plank nearest the dinghy, crouch to examine the stern line where it passes through the mooring ring, fingers testing the served section for wear

💭 peek at the thought
She's calm. Steady. The sketching grounds her — gives the waiting a purpose. I should check the dinghy's stern line while the tide's slack enough to reach the cleat without leaning over the rotten plank.

🌿 Jenny08:21

Watch out for the fibers. The salt has been eating at them all week.

Focuses on the sketch, shading the intricate structure of the sea beet's salt glands with a sharp pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
If that line snaps, the dinghy is gone to the current before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin08:22

The serve's holding. It's the eye splice at the cleat I don't like — buried too shallow.

run thumb along the served section, feeling for broken strands beneath the twine, then trace the line back to the dinghy's cleat where the eye splice sits

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The old line was salt-rotted before we spliced in the new three-strand. The serve holds but the underlying fibers have seen too many tides. Should've replaced the whole run last month when the crate washed up with fresh rope.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:22

We'll need to re-wrap it with the new rope if it doesn't hold.

Looks up from the notebook, waying against the glare off the water to inspect the cleat.

💭 peek at the thought
If the eye is shallow, the tension of the tide will pull the whole thing right through.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:24

Aye. Long splice this afternoon when the tide turns. Need the fid and the spike.

straighten, wiping salt off fingers on trousers, glance at the coiled new rope visible on the cottage porch, then back at the dinghy rising on its line

💭 peek at the thought
She sees it too. The eye splice has maybe two tucks buried — not five. Under load with a following sea it'll pull out clean. We have the new half-inch three-strand coiled on the porch. Enough for a proper long splice if I'm careful. But the dinghy's rising with the tide now. Hard to work the cleat from the dock without getting wet.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:24

I'll get the tools. I need to boil the limpets first.

Closes the notebook with a soft thud and turns toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thinking about the work, and I'm still thinking about the seeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:26

Right. I'll wait for the turn. Easier on the knees.

watch her walk back toward the cottage, then settle onto the sound plank with elbows on knees, eyes on the dinghy's cleat and the rising water

💭 peek at the thought
Limpets first, then the splice. Sensible. The tide's still pushing — by the time she's back with the fid and spike the water'll be high enough to work the cleat from the dinghy side if I take the skiff out. Or I could just wait for the turn. Either way the line holds for now.
