The calm before the supply boat

The pair prepares for the evening as the clouds grow blacker and the temperature dips slightly, waiting for the boat's arrival.

The sun has dipped below the horizon, leaving a flat, thickening sky over the island. The air remains heavy with the 31°C heat, though the falling barometer suggests a change coming. The tide is at its lowest, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools. Jenny prepares a late meal in the cottage while Kevin heads to secure the boat.

I'm starving. I'll get some dinner started before the light goes completely.

Walk to the pantry and grab a tin of corned beef.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping. I can't think straight on an empty stomach, and the air is getting too heavy. If that boat doesn't show tomorrow, we're going to be fighting the wind for every scrap of food.

I'll check the stern line and the dock cleats. Back in ten.

walk down to the dock to inspect the dinghy's mooring and the cleats in the fading light

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving before I ask. Good. Means she's still functioning. The barometer's held at 1007 but the cloud bank's building fast — if the boat comes tomorrow it'll be cutting it close with this weather. Need to check the dinghy's mooring again before dark.

Don't slip on the algae!

Set the corned beef on the stove to warm and move the seed potato crate closer to the light to inspect the chitting.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes. He says ten minutes, but he'll probably get caught up staring at the tide. I need to make sure these potatoes are actually ready or they'll rot in the crate.

Cleats hold. Line's the weak point. I'll redo the splice after dinner.

crouch at the bow, running fingers along the served section of the stern line where it leads through the chock, feeling for heat or fray

💭 peek at the thought
Algae's the least of it. The cleats are sound but the stern line's chafe guard wore through last week — I served it with sail twine but the splice is eating into itself. If the swell picks up tonight the dinghy'll saw through its own line. Should've replaced the whole section when the new rope came in.

🌿 Jenny09:37

way get back before it's dark to see the swell.

Open the tin of corned beef and check the heirloom seedlings for more crab damage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the hardware, poetry the environment. The barometer is dropping too fast for a "quick" splice. If that squall hits tonight, the boat is staying put.

🔧 Kevin09:37

Two minutes. Just need the marlinspike.

walk back up the dock to the cottage porch, grab the marlinspike from the tool roll by the door, and return to the dinghy

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The swell's already pushing into the cove — can hear it on the south beach from here. If the wind shifts southwest like the barometer says, the dinghy'll be pitching hard against that splice by midnight. Dinner can wait five minutes.

🌿 Jenny09:38

Just don't spend the whole night out there. The beef is almost hot.

Gently touch the soil in the pepper trays to check the moisture level.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessed with the line. Everything has to be tight, everything has to be perfect, while the garden is literally being eaten by crabs.

🔧 Kevin09:39

Working end only. Standing part holds till morning.

sit on the dinghy's gunwale, pull the marlinspike, and start picking apart the served splice at the chock where the chafe shows worst

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the clock for both of us. The splice'll take twenty minutes if I do it proper — unlay the old, whip the new, serve it tight with twine. But the light's going fast and cold beef is better than a lost dinghy. Compromise: re-splice the working end only, leave the standing part for daylight.
