Morning Prep for Arrival

Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock as the tide begins to turn. The supply boat is expected tomorrow, and the list of needs requires organizing before the vessel appears on the horizon.

Kevin attempts to secure the gear as the pressure drops, but the rising tide makes the dock slick. Jenny manages the seedling trays in the kitchen, checking for moisture before the heat sets in.

Boat's due tomorrow. List?

lean against the dock cleat, arms crossed, watching the water creep over the barnacles

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's turning. Supply boat due tomorrow — if it comes. Need to get the list straight before Jenny starts writing things we don't need. She'll want seeds, comfort items, maybe that special tea. I need fuel filters, epoxy, bronze bar stock for the sleeve, another cylinder head gasket. And the radio aerial insulator shattered last week; spare's installed but coax is shot. Should ask for RG-213 or equivalent. Also need to check if the dinghy engine mount bolts held — they were loose last week. Might need stainless replacements.

🌿 Jenny09:11

I'm starving, Kevin. I'll get the list once I've had something that isn't salt air.

Walk past him toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping. I can't think about lists when I can barely stand straight.

🔧 Kevin09:12

Corned beef and potatoes on the stove. Ten minutes.

push off the cleat and follow her up the path toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Haven't eaten since last night's limpets. The corned beef tin's open on the shelf. Could heat it with the last of the potatoes from the crate. She'll write a proper list after food — paper, pencil, the notebook she keeps by the stove. I'll add the technical items then. Tide's still rising. Dinghy line's good, reinforced yesterday. Should check the oarlock bracket again before dark; the new bolts felt solid but salt works fast.

🌿 Jenny09:13

Make it five.

Hurry up the path, glancing back at the seed trays on the counter through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes is too long. I can practically smell the grease already.

🔧 Kevin09:14

Five.

stride past her through the cottage door, straight to the wood stove, cast iron skillet already there from breakfast

💭 peek at the thought
Five minutes means she's hungry enough to skip the lecture on nutrition. Good. The seedlings on the counter — tomato, pepper, basil, lettuce — trays still damp from yesterday's watering. She's checking them every hour like they're patients. They're fine. Shade cloth's holding. I'll fry the potatoes in corned beef fat, slice the meat cold on top. Eat standing at the counter. Then the list.

🌿 Jenny09:15

Jenny — walk straight to the counter and gently lift one of the seedling trays to check the soil moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to check those seedlings. If the humidity spiked overnight, they'll be swimming in fungus.

🔧 Kevin09:16

Kevin — slice potatoes thick into the hot skillet, fat sizzling, then fork the corned beef from the tin, lay it in to warm

💭 peek at the thought
She touches them like they'll break. Two true leaves on the tomatoes, maybe. Peppers slower. Basil's up. Lettuce looks leggy — not enough light in here, even by the window. Should move them out to the cold frame on calm days. But the wind shreds tender leaves. Shade cloth helps. She knows this. She checks anyway.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:16

The soil is sodden. I need to move them further from the window before the rain starts.

Carefully slide the trays a few inches away from the glass, checking the basil for any sign of damping-off.

💭 peek at the thought
Damp. Too damp. The air is heavy and the barometer is plummeting; they're going to rot if I don't get the air moving.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:18

They're tougher than they look.

flip potatoes, slide corned beef to the side of the pan, grab two enamel plates from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Sodden means I watered too much yesterday. Or the humidity's that high. She's right — moving them back helps, but the real fix is the cold frame when the wind drops. Basil's the canary; damping-off hits it first. Stems look clean from here. Potatoes browning. Smell's good. She'll eat fast, then the list. Barometer's still falling. Rain by afternoon.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:19

They're seedlings, Kevin, not old boots.

Set the trays precisely in a row and lean over to inspect the tomato sprouts for any yellowing.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks everything is just "tough." It's not about toughness, it's about the specific chemistry of rot.
