The heat before the rain

The tide begins to turn, and the first heavy drop of rain hits the dust-covered roof.

Jenny cooked the limpets, but the meal was poorly executed. Kevin finished sanding the gunwales but the wood remains uneven in places.

First drop’s hit. Storm’s moving in. I’m gonna sand the dinghy gunwales now—while it’s still dry enough under the porch. You gonna hold the epoxy mix when I’m ready?

walk to the dinghy, grab the sandpaper and block, begin sanding the starboard gunwale with steady strokes, smoothing the wood where the old finish has lifted.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure’s dropping fast—storm’s coming sooner than the barometer said. Rain’s starting, and the aerial insulator’s still shattered. I need to get the dinghy gunwales sanded and epoxyed before the moisture ruins the cure, but the rain’ll make that impossible. If I wait for dry weather, I might not get another chance before the supply boat’s due—or before I have to batten down. Jenny’s quiet again. She knows the radio’s dead until I fix the insulator. She’s waiting to see if I’ll do it in the rain or let it go.

I'll help, but I'm making breakfast first. I can't think on an empty stomach.

walk to the stove and put the cast iron skillet on the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
Of course he wants to sand now. He treats the weather like a personal challenge. I'm starving and the limpets are just sitting there.

Fine. Don’t burn the corned beef.

keep sanding the starboard gunwale, moving to the port side, checking the wood grain for soft spots, working methodically despite the rising humidity.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s stalling. Or maybe she’s just hungry. Either way, the rain’s coming down steady now—drumming on the porch roof. Epoxy won’t cure if the wood’s wet. I’ll sand while she cooks, but if the gunwales get damp before I brush the mix on, it’s wasted effort. Should’ve done this yesterday. Should’ve done a lot of things yesterday.

🌿 Jenny10:46

I'm not burning anything. Just stay on the port side, don't drift into the seedlings.

add the fresh limpets to the skillet with a bit of corned beef fat.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's the only one who knows how to handle things carefully. He doesn't even look at the sketches.

🔧 Kevin10:46

Seedlings are safe. I’m not drifting. Hand me the acetone rag when you’re done with the limpets—need to wipe the gunwales before I mix.

finish sanding the port gunwale, set the block down, wipe sawdust off my hands onto my trousers, watch the rain blur the garden beyond the porch edge.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s snapping because she’s worried—about the seedlings, about the storm, about me rushing. The limpets are hitting the pan. I can hear them sizzle. Smell of salt and fat. Good. Means she’s trying to keep things normal. But normal won’t fix the insulator or keep the dinghy seaworthy. The sanding’s almost done—gunwales are smooth, no fuzz. Now I need to wipe them down with acetone before the epoxy. But the acetone’s in the cabin, and the rain’s coming harder. If I go inside, I’ll track water. If I don’t clean the wood, the epoxy won’t stick. And if it doesn’t stick, the dinghy stays dead.

🌿 Jenny10:48

Just a minute. They're almost done.

stir the limpets in the pan and set the skillet on a trivet.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the surface of the boat. Everything with him is about the exterior, the shell, the parts that can be sanded smooth.
