Afternoon Preparation

Kevin is at the dock and Jenny is still on the north cliffs.

Kevin lapped the Yanmar carburetor float seat with fine emery and test-fitted the rough needle, achieving a clean seal. Jenny finished her quadrat sampling on the north cliffs, packed up, and walked back toward the cottage as the tide fell.

The epoxy's still tacky — two days in this heat and it won't kick. If I force the spar into that bracket now, the split at the mast step will open wider and the whole thing fails under sail load. But the oarlock bracket's fitted solid with the stainless backing plate. The spar's the weak link.

The spar sits in the bracket but the split gapes — three millimetres at the widest, black with uncured epoxy. Wood's moving in this heat. If I wedge it now with shims and lashings, it might hold for the wind generator. Might. But under sail? The mast steps on that same bracket. One gust and the spar snaps at the step, takes the rudder, maybe the transom with it.
