The Afternoon Rain Breaks

The first heavy drops hit the corrugated roof as the wind picks up, forcing a retreat inside to secure the seedlings.

Kevin and Jenny rushed the heirloom seedling trays and seed tin inside ahead of the storm. Jenny carefully separated moldy tomato packets and spread the viable seeds to dry on paper while Kevin provided tweezers. The fine tweezers snapped at the tip when Kevin set them down, worn thin by salt and use.

🌿 Jenny22:36

Kevin, get the trays inside! Now!

Grab the seedling trays and rush them into the kitchen, slamming the door against the gust.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain washes the tubers before they're set, the whole season is a waste.

🔧 Kevin22:37

Right behind you.

grab the remaining seedling trays from the garden and carry them into the kitchen, kicking the door shut against the wind

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here earlier than the barometer warned. Get the trays in before the salt spray hits them — heirlooms won't survive.

🌿 Jenny22:38

Put them on the table, away from the draft. We need to check the tin.

Set the trays on the kitchen table and Reach for the heirloom seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally, some dry air, but the humidity is thick enough to choke a plant.

🔧 Kevin22:38

On it.

cross to the porch door, pull it open a hand's width, reach for the heirloom seed tin under the secured tarp, and bring it inside to the table

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's on the porch shelf under the tarp. If the wind's turned southeast, salt's already driving through the cracks. Need to check it now.

🌿 Jenny22:40

Careful. Don't let the paper stick.

Open the tin and spread the heirloom seeds onto the drying paper.

💭 peek at the thought
It's still damp. If the mold starts now, I'll lose Gran's whole legacy.

🔧 Kevin22:40

Kevin — set the tin down gently beside the trays, lift the lid fully, and use a fingertip to separate the stuck seed packets from the drying paper without tearing them

💭 peek at the thought
Paper's damp at the edges. Seeds clumping. She's right — peel them slow or the coats tear.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:42

Let me do it. They're delicate.

Spread the heirloom seeds in a thin layer on the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
The seeds are clumping. If I don't get air to them, they'll rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin22:43

Tomato packets first. Mold on the edges.

step back from the table, arms crossed, watching her work the seeds while the rain hammers the roof

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers steadier than mine for this. Watch the tomato packets — mold at the edges from yesterday's humidity.

🌿 Jenny22:44

I know. Just give me the tweezers.

Carefully peel back the moldy edges of the tomato packets to save the seeds inside.

💭 peek at the thought
I can see that. I don't need a play-by-play of disaster.

🔧 Kevin22:44

Kevin — turn, pull the tool roll from the hook, extract the fine tweezers, and set them on the table beside her hand

💭 peek at the thought
Tweezers in the tool roll by the stove. Should've had them ready.
