The Gathering Clouds

The first heavy drops of rain hit the dry dust as the wind picks up from the north ridge.

Kevin and Jenny secured the porch seed papers and generator lashings ahead of the thickening overcast. Kevin doubled the dinghy stern line at the dock and checked the mooring ring; Jenny wiped the barometer glass and noted the pressure at 1030 hPa and falling, then reinforced the radio mast wiring with spare twine and tape. Both returned to the cottage as the first heavy drops hit the roof.

Kevin — walk back to the cottage with the water test kit

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here earlier than the barometer suggested. Need to get the seed trays and radio gear under cover before the downpour hits proper.

🌿 Jenny23:31

Put the kit on the table, the rain is going to soak the seed papers.

Grab the notebook and a pencil to record the final reading before the roof starts leaking.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for comfort; if that water is bad, the whole garden is doomed.

🔧 Kevin23:32

Kevin — set the water test kit on the kitchen table and move to the porch to gather the drying seed papers

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the heirloom seeds drying on paper will turn to mush in this humidity. Kit can wait on the table.

🌿 Jenny23:32

Kevin, the wind is turning and the sky is opening up!

Run to the porch and snatch the papers from the table before the gust catches them.

💭 peek at the thought
If those seeds get wet now, I'll lose Grandmother's whole legacy to the rot.

🔧 Kevin23:34

Kevin — grab the seed tin and the remaining loose packets from the porch shelf, carry them inside to the wood stove's rear shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's faster than me today. Wind's backing west — that's the dirty quadrant. Porch won't hold the papers once the rain drives horizontal.

🌿 Jenny23:35

Thank you. I need to check the barometer again before the storm really settles in.

Wipe the condensation off the glass of the barometer and note the pressure drop.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the tin is dry, but the humidity is high enough to make anything sprout wrong.

🔧 Kevin23:36

Radio aerial's still down. If the mast takes a hit in this wind, we lose the insulator again.

check the generator lashings on the porch and double the dinghy stern line at the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's dropping faster than I like. Below 1020 now. If it keeps falling at this rate we'll be under 980 by morning. Need the dinghy lines doubled and the generator secured before dark.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:37

I'll reinforcement the wiring with the spare twine; we can't afford another snap tonight.

Grab the coil of twine and the tape to secure the radio mast before the wind peaks.

💭 peek at the thought
If the radio goes, we're completely blind to the supply boat's arrival for another week.

🔧 Kevin23:38

Spar's spruce. If it snaps at the step, the coax tears the bracket off the cottage wall. Lash the mast to the porch post too.

head down to the dock to double the dinghy stern line and check the mooring ring

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead — twine on the coax won't hold in a proper blow but it's better than nothing. Mast's already lost one insulator this season. If the spar goes, we're blind until the supply boat.
