Rain settles on the roof

Evening rain hammers the cottage roof. Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with the barometer, the notebook, and a pot of boiled limpets. The wind shakes the porch lashings. The generator hums steady behind the wall. They eat in the dim light, listening for any change in the weather or the sea.

Kevin spent the evening tending to the radio equipment and checking the barometer as the pressure continues to drop. Jenny focused on the seedling trays, struggling with the high humidity affecting the delicate heirloom tomato sprouts.

Check the lashings on the generator. The wind is picking up.

write '1030 hPa, falling, 16:42' in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought

The pressure is still dropping. If it hits 1000, the garden rows will be washed out.

On it.

walk to the generator shed and inspect all lashings, tightening any that have worked loose

💭 peek at the thought

She's right. The generator's running clean but the vibration'll work the lashings loose in a sustained blow. Better check now than at midnight in the dark.

I'm going to move the sea beet leaves. The humidity is too high for the kitchen.

gather the drying leaves from the paper towels and move them closer to the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought

He's too slow. The rain is going to get worse before he even finishes the shed.

Kevin — check the generator mount bolts and fuel line connections while I'm out here, then walk back to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought

Smart. The stove'll pull the moisture out faster than the air will. She's learning the cottage's rhythms faster than I did.

The barometer is still dropping. We need to check the seed potatoes tomorrow.

write '1030 hPa, falling, 16:45' in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought

If that pressure doesn't level out, the garden wall is going to take a hit.

Tomorrow first light. Before the tide turns.

walk back into the kitchen, wipe hands on a rag, and sit down to finish the limpets

💭 peek at the thought

Barometer at 1030 and still falling steady. That's not a squall — that's a system moving in. The seed potatoes in the crate by the porch are the least of it; if the dock goes or the dinghy parts its mooring, we're stuck here longer than the contract says. But she's thinking ahead. That's good.

way make sure the generator is actually secure.

pick up the pencil and sketch the edge of a sea beet leaf in the margin, capturing the salt crystals before the light fades completely.

💭 peek at the thought

First light might be too late if the storm breaks as hard as it looks.

🔧 Kevin23:46

Mounts are tight. Fuel line's sound. Lashings held.

scoop the last limpets from the pot, shell and eat them slow, watching the porch through the window

💭 peek at the thought

She didn't hear me say I already checked the mounts and fuel line. Or she's testing. Either way, the pencil moving in the dim light — she's still drawing. That's something.
