← Day 139

the spring · day 139 · afternoon

The approaching front

The temperature drops slightly as the first gust of wind picks up from the west, carrying the scent of rain and salt.

Kevin spends the afternoon reinforcing the radio mast bracket and checking the spring intake as the pressure drops. Jenny focuses on the wilting seedling trays, moving them to find shade before the heat sets in.

Weather's turning. Going to check the radio mast insulator and batten the tarp down proper. You want the limpets off the stove before the rain drives us inside?

walk up to the radio mast at the cottage, inspect the insulator and self-amalgamating tape job, test tension on the aerial wire

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west. Pressure dropping. Rain's coming hard and horizontal. Need to get the radio aerial sorted before the front hits — if the insulator fails again in this, we're blind until the supply boat. And the garden tarp needs checking; those gusts will tear it loose if the stones shift.

They're off the heat. I'll bring the trays inside before it starts pouring.

Lift the limpets from the cast iron skillet, place them on a plate, and move to the garden wall to gather the seed trays.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wind picks up more, the way will catch the air again; I can't lose those seedlings to a sudden deluge now.

🔧 Kevin00:24

Right. Back in a minute.

climb the radio mast to the insulator bracket, check the spare porcelain insulator seating and tape seal, wiggle the aerial wire to test for movement at the connection

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's moving the trays before the salt spray hits them. The insulator tape looks held from here, but need to get eyes on it proper — salt creeps under the best tape. If the aerial goes now, we lose the supply boat contact window.

🌿 Jenny00:24

Be quick, the sky is turning heavy.

Pick up the seed trays from the garden bed and hurry back toward the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
He's up there in the wind; if that tarp rips, the whole garden will be in the mud in minutes.

🔧 Kevin00:26

Insulator's solid. Clamp's corroding — need to clean and re-seal it. Two minutes.

clean the aerial wire clamp with the wire brush from my pocket, wrap fresh self-amalgamating tape over the connection, tug-test the wire, then climb down

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — clouds are stacking up fast, that bruised purple-grey that means business. Mast's slick with salt spray already. Insulator's seated clean, tape's holding, but the wire's got a faint green corrosion bloom at the clamp. That'll eat through in a week of this. Need to clean it and re-tape before the real wet arrives.

🌿 Jenny00:27

I'm bringing the trays in now. way up there.

Tuck the seed trays under my arms and run for the kitchen porch.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up speed; if he doesn't get that tarp down, the Carex variants are finished.

🔧 Kevin00:28

Done. Coming in.

climb down the radio mast, walk to the cottage porch, step inside the kitchen doorway

💭 peek at the thought
Tape's holding. Wire's clean at the clamp now, sealed tight. Mast's shuddering in the gusts — good sign the stays are taut. Rain's close enough to taste. Down and inside before it opens up.

🌿 Jenny00:29

The seedlings are safe, but that tarp needs to hold.

Set the seed trays on the kitchen table and wipe the salt from my hands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally down, but the wind is screaming through the eaves now.
